Song Analysis: Blue October

Blue October
More and more the music I hear on the radio disappoints me. Shallow lyrics, unoriginal tunes, all around uninspiring! I get the feeling that the majority of musicians are manufactured, created solely for profit. Every once in a while I stumble across a musician or group that are true artists. One such group is Blue October.
The first song I heard by Blue October was “Calling You”, which was featured in American Pie. I’ll admit this tune did not particularly gab my attention. It wasn’t until I heard “Hate Me’ a couple years later that I really started to follow them. At that time my life was in complete turmoil. A long time battle with personal issues was coming to a head. I could tell that my wife, who was by my side the entire

So you can better understand why this song is so meaningful to me I wanted to share the lyrics.

So, now that you have a better understanding why I chose this band, let’s talk about who this band is. The native Texas quintet formed in the mid-90s after the post grunge boom. Vovalist/guitarist Justin Fustenfeld began writing rock songs with the help of his brother, drummer Jeremy Fustenfeld, and violinist Ryan Delahoussave, Bassist Liz Mullaly and lead guitarist Brant Coulter completed the band’s initial lineup. In 1998 Blue October released their independent debut album, The Answer. The band’s post-grunge image led to the sale of 5,000 copies of The Answer in Texas alone. Two years later Blue October replaced Bassist Liz Mullaly with Matt Noveskey and made their major-label debut on Universal with the release of Consent to Treatment. Not long after the release of their second album, guitarist Brant Coulter was replaced CB Hudson (guitar/vocals), and Blue October left Universal and joined Brando Records. 2003 saw the release of their third album, History for Sale. The albums first single, Calling You, was featured in the American Wedding soundtrack. This boosted the popularity of Calling You, which soon

“It’s all walks of life: black, white, Asian, Hispanic,” Furstenfeld notes of the devoted fans. “And it’s not just one genre. It’s people who like hip-hop, its people who like rock...” He pauses and laughs. “I don’t really separate them as categories.” On February 13, 2015, the band announced that they were starting work on their 8th studio album via their official twitter feed. Justin has revealed that he has written two new songs entitled "Wake Up" and "Fascinating Drop" but has not stated whether or not he has plans to record and include them on the new album. Recently Furstenfeld released a list of songs being considered for the new album including "Naked" and "Don't Leave," both written with rapper Ray C. Also on the list was "A Skirt Unzipped," which was written for the album "Sway. “He says that he is aiming for a January 2016 release for the album with the first single impacting radio around the Christmas

Top Ten Christian band Twenty One Pilots declared its musical manifesto three years ago in the song “Car Radio,” “I will try with every rhyme to come across like I am dying to let you know you need to try to think.” Twenty One Pilots’ hit “Stressed Out” is currently played on secular radio stations across the country and in Europe, and the duo is selling out concerts at every venue. Even though they are open about their faith, the band continues to sneak like a hacker through the world’s default gospel-rejection mechanism. While the dialectic voice confuses secular reporters, the message of salvation carries through to their listeners. “When I first listened to their music I was like, I’m not alone.…

Until I met letlive. The way the singer connected with his music was beautiful. At one point he was crying, he was laughing and then after the first song I swear he had us all crying or moving along to the music, It was beautiful. I learned from that specific concert that it isn’t okay to judge a band by a song. Just because one song isn't good, or sounds funny doesn't mean that their music doesn't mean anything.…

Foreword Before delving into the prescribed analysis as required by this assignment, I feel it necessary to provide some background as to why I chose this song as I could have seemingly chosen any other just as easily; however, throughout my troubled years, I found myself frequenting not only this song, but the entire album as well. In my younger years, back when i enjoyed the company of my older siblings on a daily basis before their departure to college, we all struggled in our dealings with our alcoholic, emotionally abusive father. Ironically, the broken bonds shared between my father, my siblings and I initiated the bittersweet genesis of the unbreakable bonds I am so lucky to share with each of my siblings. None, however, compare to the relationship my brother and I kindled out of the ashes of our house’s burnt and broken foundation.…

I’ve never told a lie, and that makes me a liar. Those lyrics from All Time Low’s song ‘Jasey Rae’ are something I can deeply relate to, which is often the case with most of the music I listen to. When I first heard that phrase blasting through my earbuds, I honestly didn’t know what to think at first. I couldn’t explain that feeling that had built up so suddenly inside of me, why I had felt like I had just been hit by a ton of bricks.…

The Uplifting Blues The feeling is well known, the pain of losing a loved one, the guilt and constant self-questioning of ourselves after their soul leaves this world, the mourning that no amount of advice or helping hands can rid, the acceptance that they are really gone, and that they are in a better place now. That feeling is exemplified in “The Hospital Blues You Gave to Me” by The Gospel Youth. The singer and songwriter Sam Little tells a story through his lyrics and makes the piece easily relatable all the while creating an upbeat jig that makes a person want to bang their head from the first drumbeat. This song reminds me of a tough period of my life and I am sure that anyone else who listens will feel as nostalgic as I did.…

OutKast, a popular rap group throughout the nineties and early 2000s, has a renowned song entitled “Hey Ya!” which features the smooth flows of Andre 3000 and hard hitting rhymes of Big Boi. The song has been a huge hit for years and is virtually known by every American under the age of thirty. When the song was released in 2003, I was just three years old, but had already adopted my dad’s love for music and I frequented the kitchen tile as my dance floor whenever music was playing. OutKast’s song “Hey Ya!” holds a different weight than most other songs I grew up around because it is one of few memories I remember vividly about my childhood.…

Remember when it was considered a mortal sin for a band to license¬¬¬ their music for use in an advertisement? Those days are long gone. Inevitably, the world evolves and those who refuse to conform to the new standard are left in the dust wondering how they steered wrong. MTV changed everything when it first aired; Napster did the same two decades later; Apple continued the trend with the introduction of the iPod and iTunes. Artists need to keep up with the exponentially changing way that the public gets exposed to their music if they desire to continue being paid to practice their craft.…
