(Tension Between Father and Son) Have you ever gotten into a fight with your parents? Did it ever seem like your parent was favoring your sibling or leaving you out? In the story “The Prodigal Son,” by King James the eldest brother felt like his father was treating him unfairly. In the story a father of two sons, gives his youngest son ten million dollars for him to go blow in Vegas, while the eldest son stayed home and worked in the fields. When the youngest son comes home broke and homeless, he was hoping to at least be able to be a servant of his father’s because he was sure that his father would reject him. To his surprise, his father welcomed him home with a huge party. When the eldest son heard of the party he became furious and jealous. He wasn’t mad at his brother for getting a party, but more mad at his dad for throwing him a party for nothing. When his father asked him to come into the

If the father did the logical thing and told his younger son that he must earn his money by working, and then gave the money to his older son for all the hard work he had done, it would have taught both the sons a positive lesson. If the father chose to do this, the elder son would have learned that when he works hard and respects his father, he will get rewarded with money, which promotes good work ethic. For the younger son, the lesson learned would be that if he works hard like his brother he could get what he wants the most; money to spend. The elder son, after working hard to earn his money, would have spent his money more wisely. When the youngest son was just given the money he did not make good choices with it, “ And when he had spent all. there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.” (Lines 8-9) Clearly, the father should have given his money to his hard working son to set and example for both of

Although authority may seem tough, we learn from three sources that power has the decision to be whatever it wants, including compassionate. We will explore this position through three pieces of text including, “Beat Not the Poor Desk” by Marie Ponsot and Rosemary Deen, “The Prodigal Son” by Aesop and “Stockings” by Tim O’brien. Making connections to each piece, the goal is to reference one another on a common theme. In the short story text, “Beat Not the Poor Desk” by Marie Ponsot and Rosemary Deen, we learn how in every parable one character holds authority. According to these women, “That character has authority because of where he stands.”…

In this version of “The Second Son,” I took your advice to tell the story from another POV the extreme and changed from “single I” to an epistolary piece, with no central narrator. In this version, Mal Dallon is less of a “crazy” man, wandering the streets and fighting off his own personal demons, and more of an ignored messiah, in that he’s bringing a message to an unenlightened world (through his death), only for it to be quickly forgotten for the next news bite. Is this version better than the original? I honestly don’t know. But, I can say that it’s completely different.…

“The Boat” by Alistair MacLeod was able to show the pressure that parents place on their offsprings in a very relatable manner. His words were able to capture, in great detail, a child’s train of thought and how they would act when placed in a very difficult position. The narrator had to decide whether he should follow in his family’s tradition and become a fisherman or stray off and continue his education. As a student about to graduate in less than a year's time, I am able to relate with the son. With thoughts concerning the future, different occupational paths to follow, and grades to keep up, this is a very stressful year for me.…

John Updike, author of “Son,” uses an unusual structure of writing to convey a very important point in his story. His story relates to the relationship between a father and a son and uses many generations in his own family as examples. In his story, Updike writes about his feelings and thoughts about having a teenage son and then goes on explaining how his father felt about him and how his father felt about him, and so on. When he first talks about his teenage son, he makes sure that he states the date because the goal of him writing in this order is not to confuse the reader but so that the reader goes in depth in understanding the beliefs and attitudes that are passed down from generation to generation. Updike introduces his story by…

The Legendary Fall “About suffering they were never wrong,” Landscape with the fall of Icarus both the painting and poem displays a level of suffering that should not happen to anyone but, sadly it does. The painting gives you more of a visual approach as to what is happening and you can draw your own conclusion. This painting displays quite and unnoticed because it shows someone drowning and everyone else turning a blind eye. The poem on the other hand is clarifying what is happening in the painting just more specific. Both the poem and painting signifies the theme of quiet and unnoticed because it displays how someone could be taking their last breath and it can go extremely unnoticed to others and also that the world would never fully recognize his accomplishment.…
