In the novel Sometimes it Happens by Lauren Barnholdt, Hannah was a character who intentionally deceives her best friend Ava. Noah cheated on Ava with Hannah, nothing could ruin a friendship worse than dishonesty. The friendship was Hannah’s, and she was the girl who slept with her bestfriends boyfriend, Hannah does not see herself in such a way that she is a cheater, she simply sees herself fighting for what everyone is fighting to find, true love. Hannah had a horrible summer, Ava was away at camp and her boyfriend was cheating on her. Being the good, worrisome friend Ava was, she sent Noah to check on Hannah. Hannah got a summer job at Cooley’s, the teen hangout, to earn money for a car. Noah …show more content…
She was so worried about the friendship. “My friendship with Ava is 100 percent my responsibility.” (309) Noah was worried as well, but he was more worried about hurting Ava even though he thought they would not end up together. (120) Throughout the whole novel, the story switches through the first day of senior year, the last day of junior year and the summertime. Hannah was hurting, she was upset, she wanted someone to love. When Hannah was hurting over Sebastian, she did not mean to fall in love with Noah. She just did. Noah was her knight in shining armor, he saved her from being lonely. Hannah was trying to spare Ava’s feelings after realizing she was actually in love with Noah. Even though Hannah’s attempts of trying to help Ava, she failed and instead, hurt her friendship with Ava and Lacey. (299) Hannah’s intentions were good but the outcome was bad. Hannah’s intentions of sparing the feelings of Ava were not good at all. She does not see herself as someone who wrecks relationships but she sees herself as fighting for something everyone else is. True love is what she wanted. True love is what Hannah thought she had. As far as she was concerned, Noah was her true love. Hannah loved Noah and he loved her but it hurt Ava in the process because she lost her best friend and her boyfriend all in one
