The story begins with Jim and Will waking up to the sound of a train in the middle of the night and follow it to where they see the carnival being set up. After this intriguing sight they go home and return the next morning where they run into their old teacher, Ms. Foley as she was about to enter a maze filled with mirrors. Jim and Will warn her not to go in there and after she exits the maze, she appears disturbed in the process of looking for her nephew, Robert.

Will’s father helps them with their game plan and . Mr. Dark, the other co-owner of the carnival, kidnaps the boys and Will’s father discovers the key to destroying the carnival and to regain unity with his son, Will. Mr. Dark then sends an assassin to kill Will’s father. Will’s father rescues Will and they set off to rescue Jim, but discover that he is in the Carousel growing older by the minute. They find a way to turn the carousel off, but it is too late and Jim dies. Mr. Dark is then killed by Mr. Holloway and all of his acquaintances are set free. Will then begins to fill with sorrow, but then is comforted by his father with the fact that they had defeated the evil that the carnival had brought upon them. They grow happy which then does a reverse spell on Jim resurrecting him from the dead. Will is overwhelmed with happiness and they begin to sing and celebrate their well
