Overcoming heartbreak is one of the most difficult things a person can experience. Many people have gone through this predicament. Not only is it the toughest thing to go through, but also the longest to overcome. However, heartbreaks usually create great stories. There are many songs regarding overcoming heartbreaks, which many people listen too since they can relate to what is being said. They use music almost like a medicine to heal themselves. Two songs that represent the theme, overcoming heart, quite well are Somebody To Love by Queen and Grenade by Bruno Mars. Both of these songs are admired and listened to by many people around the world regarding the situation they are in. Because the songs are so similar in terms of their theme, there …show more content…
The wrong choice of words can easily divert listeners or readers which result in misinterpretation of the message intended to be conveyed, which is what the case is in this song. Most of the words have an extreme exaggeration and give out the wrong message. The lyrics are not as powerfully suitably as Somebody to Love. One example would be where he claims “I would catch a grenade for you”. The diction he is implying is giving the readers the wrong message he is trying to send and is also completely different to the theme; overcoming heartbreak. The listener would assume right away that he stills cares about her and would never get over her even when she uninterested in him. He is not trying to overcome heartbreak. Instead, he ends up going back to her at the end. This gives the reader the wrong message. Another evidence would be“I would jump in front of a train for you”. The use of diction is a very crucial role in storytelling. Bruno Mars does not convey the theme well enough through diction. Another device that does not properly convey the theme would be imagery. When Bruno mentions how he would “throw my hand on the blade for you” and “take a bullet straight through my brain” the reader/listener immediately pictures a lot of pain and violence. The main theme is trying to overcome heartbreak, and because he gave out the wrong picture, the listeners would now think that violence is the solution to overcoming heartbreak, which is not the proper image he is trying to convey to the listener. His use of imagery lacks the proper message he is trying to get across clearly. Both lines represent pain and violence which is not suppose to be associated with the theme. The use of diction and imagery are very distinct in this song. The readers/listeners can easily find the devices. Both of these devices are not properly portrayed in this song. It is not properly sending the

Juxtaposition plays a huge part in the song as it places 2 completely opposite opinions side by side. P.F Slogan, using this feature, helps create a clear point of view in the listener’s head, showing how ridiculous certain decisions were. In the first verse he juxtaposes, “You’re old enough to kill” with “but not for voting” and ‘you don’t believe in war” with “then what’s that gun your totin.” Another example of juxtaposition in the song is “Hate you next door neighbour” with “but don’t forget to say grace” (4th Verse/Bridge). Metaphors such as “the world in a grave” (2nd verse) and “even the Jordan River has bodies floatin” (1st verse) causes the listener consider the implications this song was trying to display, a strong but balanced sense of fear, courage and indifference .…

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” is a song originally written and recorded by the Grunge band Nirvana in 1991 on their “Nevermind” album and is considered to be one of the most influential songs the band had written during their time. One year later, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was covered by singer-songwriter Tori Amos for her “Crucify” EP. While the cover may be extremely different from the original, there are still some elements that are similar among both versions. In contrast, both Nirvana and Amos play different styles of music which would change how the song is viewed by their respective audiences. Although the lyrics, in general, are the same, the overall meaning and mood of the song is different based which artist is playing the song.…

“All Star” by Smash Mouth is encouraging song about choosing to be spectacular at what you do. The tone of the song is quite casual, written in first person and as if it was a conversation between the listener and the singer. It starts off with the singer admitting that “somebody once told me that the world is going to roll me”, and that he “ain’t the sharpest tool in the shed”. Clearly he doesn’t think that he amounts to much in the long run when it comes to following the rules and book smarts. This is furthered by him going to say that “it didn’t make sense not to live for fun, your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb”.…

Eliot utilizes every aspect of the poem to exploit the hypocrisy of the people during the Victorian Era.
