This is intentional deception because Viola knows that she is going to trick people into thinking she is someone she is not, especially by dressing up as the opposite gender. Since it was Viola’s idea to dress up as Cesario to work for the Duke, this shows that she clearly knows what she wants to do and what might happen from it. In addition to Cesario’s role in Twelfth Night, Joe and Jerry in Some Like it Hot also play similar roles using intentional deception through appearance. In the film, Joe and Jerry dress up as women who are named Josephine and Daphne. The plan to willingly dress up as women is an example of intentional deception because they dress up on purpose for a reason. Their objective of dressing up is to convince everyone they are eligible to play in an all girl jazz band as women. In both Twelfth Night and Some Like it Hot, characters fall in love with each other and cite a prime example of accidental deception. For instance, in Twelfth Night Olivia falls in love with Cesario, but Olivia does not know that Cesario is actually a female that is disguised as a male. This example is an important reference to accidental deception because Viola’s intentions of becoming Cesario were not to have Olivia fall in love with him. But, instead Viola’s actions caused Olivia to fall in love with a different person than she thought Cesario really was, even though Viola did not predict it to happen. Similar to the events in Twelfth Night mentioned before, Joe and Jerry in Some Like it Hot experience love with surrounding characters in the film as well. In particular, one character experiences accidental and self deception. For instance, Daphne is pursued by a man named Osgood, who is actually a millionaire and a sea captain. After going on a date, Osgood falls in love with Daphne and proposes to her. This is an example of accidental deception because Daphne only goes on the date as a favor for Joe, and Daphne did not plan on Osgood pursuing her further and proposing. Therefore, Daphne’s appearance as a woman convinces Osgood to think that she is someone that she is not, which represents accidental deception
