PROBLEM/OPPORTUNITY
In Nigeria, high schools do not focus on the core subjects of sciences; this has resulted in a lack of science-focused students. This is an issue because a study conducted by Scidev.net has concluded that basic science has links to economic development (Usher, 2013). Data from UNESCO dated year 2005 shows that, there are only 203 researchers per million people in Nigeria, against 4,663 in the United States. Nigeria as a developing country could shift it’s focus on encouraging students to learn and focus on the sciences, which would eventually lead the nation to economic growth over a long period of time. For the students, we want to find individuals who are hungry to learn, individuals who have the passion but don’t have the necessary resources to pursue their love for science. For the teachers, we aim to target individuals who want to improve their teaching abilities and share their love for science to the world. We plan to achieve this be creating a pilot program with a pilot program in Ibadan, where we feel a focus on science would be good for the students. Upon the success of the program we will start expanding First of all, we will make a contract with a public school that has a huge interest in science education. Silicon Space would also finance the future teachers’ trainings during the summer so that they could start to teach classes no later than in October, when the laboratories renovation would be supposed to end. Regarding the location, we chose to start our project in Ibadan, the country’s third largest city, as there are already a lot of initiatives going on in the two biggest cities, Lagos and Kano.
This project is not an investment or grants in education in general. This is not about any kind of teaching (arts, languages, sports, history, etc.); it is specific to sciences (mathematics, biology, physics), and it is for high schools. We are specifically targeting the pupils between 14 and 18 years
