SBFT can be simply modified to work with numerous populations such as children and adolescents that have been found to react to SBFT positively (Lethem, 2002). SBFT has been used in schools across the country with ample success. Similar benefits can be seen by mental health therapists who use SBFT with children and adolescents. Children are regularly hesitant about assemblies that have risen due to problems concerning them. A solution focused therapist can be a wanted reprieve from all the emphasis on the problem.…
We set goals, interventions, and crisis interventions. One of the goals was to have her husband come in to do couples therapy. She really wanted to work with her husband and get a better level of communication set up. So we were doing Solution Focused Therapy.…
While all therapists make use of technical procedures, most of these processes are based on “preparing clients to take some actions to help themselves” (Miller et al, 1997, p. 29). Consequently, the techniques used by the variant models can stop being utilized to compare and contrast; contrariwise, they can become “vehicles for enhancing the effects of the other common factors” (Miller et al., 1997, p.…
This therapy is derived influenced by several other theories such as Behavioral, Cognitive and Social Learning theories. Each of these theories have a direct influence on each other and are the building blocks of the Solution Focused Therapy. Simply looking at the names of each of these theories one can see that they are derived from several aspects of ones life. Abby has had difficulties with her behaviors, cognitive abilities as well as in the social settings of her life. These observations make Solution Focused Therapy one that would be most beneficial to Abby…
When using this model, therapist will try to avoid conversations (which is not always possible) about what is healthy/unhealthy or might be functional/dysfunctional within a relationship (Gurman, 2008). The whole point of Solution-Focused Therapy is to help the clients reach their goals that they wish to achieve by trying to keep the client focused on that goal so that it can be reached (Gurman,…
As a counselor I have adopted an integrative approach to working with clients incorporates interventions from primarily three theories: Solution-Focused, Cognitive Behavioral, and Mindfulness-based theory. These three approaches match my personality and my basic conceptualization of the human struggle with emotional, mental, and relationship health. As a professional counselor, I believe in a holistic approach to therapy, which does not limit me to these three theories, however, I align most closely with these theories. I am open to any theoretical approach which may be helpful in meeting the individual needs of my cliental. I will now outline the specific value I find in each of these three theories.…
Based on the readings, I have learned that there are methods I can utilize in my current practice. The first that would be used is SFBT. Solution focused brief therapy would be extremely beneficial for my client whom I am having difficulties with during our sessions together. Therefore, practice would ensure that everyone whom he encounters within the school setting can come together to know what goals my client has and having him continually working towards them throughout the week. I wouldn't want him to only work on them while I am there, but to ensure it happens daily.…
Explain your understanding of the rationale for this EBP model. My time as a case manager, in a harm reduction program for homeless veterans has allowed me to have weekly sessions with a client for over two months now. The client is an Army vet with a history of substance abuse secondary to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In my effort to asses the client’s mental health on a weekly basis, I took notice in how the Feedback Informed Intervention (FIT), provided a unique opportunity for me and my client. Boswell, Kraus, Miller, & Lambert (2013) says there 's a moment in time when the patient and provider can look through a window together which the therapist and patient can catch glimpses into a unique world-view (Boswell, Kraus, Miller,…
A patient may present with a certain idea of the type of treatment they are willing to undergo as well as their desired outcomes for their time spent in therapy. Therefore, it is necessary that the psychologist informs the patient of the cost and benefits of each treatment and takes into consideration the patient’s preferences. In order for a psychological treatment to be effective, there must be best research evidence, clinical expertise, and an understanding of the client’s personality, culture, and…
As mentioned previously, the study of psychotherapy encompasses a variety of theoretical approaches. Each form of therapy borrows elements from each other, while building upon new ideas and techniques to call their own. Psychotherapy is described as “A collaborative treatment based on the relationship between an individual and a psychologist. Grounded in dialogue, it provides a supportive environment that allows [the client] to talk openly with someone who’s objective, neutral, and nonjudgmental” (“Understanding Psychotherapy,” n.d.). Psychotherapy assists people in modifying their emotions, cognitions, and behaviors.…
Franklin, C., Biever, J., Moore, K., Clemons, D., & Scamardo, M. (2001). The effectiveness of solution-focused therapy with children in a school setting. Research on Social Work Practice, 11(4), 411-434. Brief Introduction…
The treatment process is mainly the responsibility of the patient; the therapist assumes a non-direct role to assist the individual by Increasing self-esteem and a larger openness to experience are the two main goals of this type of therapy. The success of client centered therapy depends largely on the attitude of the therapist, who must exhibit three intertwining attitudes for client centered therapy to be affective for the individual. Rogers believed that people must choose to guide their lives by their own interpretation and must strive actively to improve ourselves (Shultz). These attributes include congruence, unconditional positive regard for the individual, and empathy.…
Assessment of The Whole Self The provision of evaluation entails the collection of data to identify, examine, assess, and address the problems, issues, and situations of clients in the counseling relationship. Assessments likewise help in determining what questions to ask and how the resulting information will be utilized in arriving at a diagnosis (Jones, 2010). Whether a clinician practices in a school, private practice, or other health care settings, assessment play an integral role (Hutchinson, 2015). Assessing The Whole Person The practice of counseling is associated with assessment and diagnosis and is indispensable for designing treatment.…
This time gave me an opportunity to undertake reflective listening through active listening which according to Rogers (1975) in his “client-centered” therapy argues that it encourages the client to share the information in more depth than if I was only asking directive questions. This enabled me to gain information when the client brought out the underlying issues including those that I had not thought about. The active listening also improved my relationship with the client since I was able to express acceptance by avoiding any expression of disagreement or judgement thus making him open up and also trust me as his couselor. This method also left me with enough time to explore and diagnose the issue thus noting the new ways of approach to the…
In looking at this theoretical approach, I found through reading that it shares important features with Carl Rogers’ person-centered therapy with the emphasis on facilitating the client’s ability to cope and to solve problems, long-term positive effects, and acceptance of the client’s internal frame of reference…
