Solitude Research Paper

I traveled back to my home in Ithaca, New York this weekend. I was there to watch basketball and to help my parents begin redoing our kitchen. When I returned home it was snowing and cold. I went outside for a grand total of six minutes and 17 second. I wandered my yard aimlessly, tried to climb a tree (I failed). I lied down in the snow and looked at the gray sky I realized two things on this quest for the solitude. First, that upstate New York, specifically Ithaca, is a barren tundra with six month long winters. Second, I realized that I could not have lived in the 1800s. I immediately scurried into my house, grabbed a blanket, turned the television on, and lied by the fire place after being outside for the lengthy six minutes and seventeen seconds of my time. I wish I could tell you that I only lasted that long because I did not have time, which is partially true, but honestly I just did not want to do it. While, I did enjoy the solitude that I experienced in my brief journey around my yard, I could not stand not doing anything. All that was going through my mind was what I had to accomplish next. I thought of the excel projects I have to do, the test I have tomorrow, and of the impending basketball games I had to go to. My mind was cluttered, so while I may have been in solitude physically, I was not truly in solitude. The question I have asked myself since this experience is why is this true?
