The Significance of Solitude
Secluded, quiet, shy, and reclusive are often words used in reference introverts. Introverted people are repeatedly urged to assert themselves, further socialize, or simply get out more. In her TED Talk, Susan Cain advocates a case for introverts, claiming they are powerful in their own unique way. She not only spoke to many through her TED Talk, but also through her books, podcast recordings, and Quiet Revolution, an organization she co-founded. Through her speech she illustrates the power of introverts through her own experiences, the emotional appeal of others, and through examples of incredibly successful historical introverted figures. …show more content…
She also mentions her own book called, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking, saying the seven years it took her to write it were extremely gratifying despite the quiet, isolation. She proves in many different ways that she not only has experience in writing and studying the lives of introverts but also has experience living as one.
Through sharing her personal experiences, the author evokes emotions and sympathy, especially with those who can relate. At her first summer camp, she has camp counselors concerned for her simply because she would rather stay inside and read rather than be surrounded by a constant group of friends. She explained that people often do not understand there is a difference between being antisocial and being introverted. Introverts simply need more time to themselves. Some people are very extroverted and enjoy being around people in fast-paced environments all the time, whereas some people are introverted, and need to recharge by spending time alone, in a relaxed setting. She goes on to explain that as the years have progressed, our society has created more of a stigma
