In this essay I am going to be comparing and contrasting the original story version of “Soldier’s Home” by Ernest Hemingway and the short movie version made by Learning in Focus. The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast the similarities and differences of all aspects of the story and movie. This will include changes to the story lines, similarities and differences of characters, changes to setting as well as the tone between each version of the story. In addition to this, I will be discussing any changes that the movie made to the original story and if those changes were successful or not. “Soldier’s Home” is a depressing story about a man named Harold Krebs. The movie does a very good job of portraying this photo accurately, as well as portraying the photo of Krebs with his fraternity. That photo is especially important because it shows Krebs smiling. Something he very rarely does after returning home from the war. In the story, Krebs goes to the Library to rent a few books. He of course rents books exclusively about the war. Krebs comments in the story that “He wished there were more maps” (168). The movie features the same books and Krebs interest in the maps just the same. There are also a few scenes in the movie that are word for word the same as the original story. One such scene would be when Harold’s mother is talking to him about using the family …show more content…
In the story, Krebs is narrated to be a depressed and somber person who has lost his ambitions in life after returning from World War I. As I have discussed, the storyline is mostly unchanged in the movie version. Besides the addition of Kenner and the dance that Krebs goes to. I think that Kenner and the dance were both good additions to the storyline. Because Krebs did not go into as much detail about his feelings on women in the movie, the dance scene served to show that Krebs was unwilling to commit to the social conventions necessary to have a girlfriend. I also believe that because Krebs did not go into detail about telling lies regarding the war, Kenner was added to discuss the subject. Kenner seemed to represent the views of most other soldiers. Happy to be back from the war and fearing for their lives when they were at war. Their discussion shows that Krebs only enjoyed one thing. Fighting in the
