During his overwatch, his group was responsible for tracking suspicious activity. According to the latest intelligence reports, there were enemy combatants somewhere in the area.

As C.R.S. was continuing his routine patrol, the sound of gunfire was heard. In seconds, his platoon was under heavy fire. Two men were pinned down and unable to leave their positions as the entire platoon was exposed to the enemy. The enemy was further uphill and had a terrifying advantage on the terrain.

According to C.R.S., “When I saw that my buddies were pinned down, I knew I had to do something. I had had enough of their screams and was not going to wait until someone else was hit. I know their families and their spouses. When I saw an opportunity to move forward, I was not going to hesitate and leave their families alone in the world.”

The weight no longer seemed to matter as nothing was more important that getting to my buddies. A few pounds of weight felt like nothing when I was afraid of losing my buddies.”

Charging toward the enemy, he ran 800 meters with his gear bouncing behind them. His amazing feat of courage and strength effectively drew the sniper fire away from the rest of the platoon. As he dodged bullets and crossed the terrain, his platoon was given a moment's break to regroup and help the men who were pinned down.

Once he was within feet of the enemy's position, C.R.S. took cover. Aiming his M24 rifle carefully, he prepared to shoot. Remembering that moment, he said, “I ran for half of a mile, but my aim was still steady and

The United States Army Air Defense Artillery had small but important roles in the Korean War. Although most the units were filling non-Air Defense roles, there are a few that set themselves above and beyond their sister units due to their actions. These units fulfilling roles other than air defense were using the M19 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage, which was a self-propelled anti-aircraft weapon. This weapon was based upon the M5 light tank chassis, but modified to fulfill the air defense role. It was then utilized as indirect and direct fire against enemy troops, vehicles and fortifications.…

SNC gave a thorough 5 paragraph order that included a Direction of attack of the Squad on the objective, gave specific tasks that outlined specific fire team assignments, and Coordinating Instructions that included maneuvers for both movement to objective and upon contact. SNC was not confident as he delivered his 5 paragraph order with little or no eye contact as he was reading from his notes and maintained a monotone voice that was hard to hear. SNC had to be prompted to establish security in the Assembly Area. SNC froze upon enemy sniper contact and was unable to disseminate orders to his fire team to gain fire superiority as he was confused on the direction of enemy contact. SNC was prompted for forward movement, but failed to gain a positive…

D-Day +1; some say we’re over the hump, but I know the trials and tribulations of this Battle have only just begun. Activity throughout the night inhibited rest for myself and my fellow men, and the cocktail of misery from yesterday leaves a bad taste in our mouths. I, by the grace of God, managed to get two hours of sleep, but was jolted awake with the weight of today’s duties; to capture the ominous Suribachi (1). Capture it and we win, fail and we die. The responsibility of this crushed down on my heart like an elephant slowly cracking my ribs.…

Generation Kill, written by Evan Wright, is a firsthand look at the fear, inhumanity, and uncertainty that surrounded the guerrilla warfare in Iraq. These young men from a variety of different back grounds enlisted bravely and arrogantly to find themselves facing the brutality of war. They trained as Recon Marines, a group of a thousand men selected to secretly gain knowledge about the enemy team. During the First Renaissance Battalion of 2003, they were forced to drive head on into the enemy battle zone. Despite many of them being rugged individualist, their confident nature could never have prepared them for the emotional and physically draining combat of war.…

Rather than describe each, he chose three men who embodied extremes of soldier behavior. Nail, the platoon politician. Barns, a man who felt out of place in the civilian world and Killigan, the imperturbable killing machine. All the other soldiers in the platoon possessed their own unique personality, but embodied some combination of the traits exhibited by these three soldiers. McDonough’s quiet assessment of the men and NCOs of his platoon proved very useful during the remainder of his time in command of the unit.…
