Soldier On The Hill Analysis

Soldier on the Hill is a fascinating book created by Jackie French, dealing with several historical issues. The story revolves around Joey, a young boy, and his experience with the ups and downs of World War II. Jackie French shows various themes in her writing, this includes war, family and hardships, but the theme that intrigued me, and was shown the most efficiently, was the theme of change. American Guerrilla by Mike Guardia details the story of Russell W. Volckmann and his heroic efforts fighting the Japanese in the Philippines during World War II (WWII). Mike Guardia claims Russell W. Volckmann is the “True Father of Special Forces” and provides a compelling argument for this position. In his book, he describes how Volckmann evaded capture by the Japanese in Bataan, escaped to the mountains of North Luzon, organized a guerrilla force of over 22,000 fighters, and waged a successful guerrilla campaign from 1942 to 1945. Following WWII, Volckmann authored the US Army’s first two field manuals regarding guerrilla warfare and was instrumental in establishing the Special Forces Regiment, as we know it today.…

“Ballad of the Green Berets” by Barry Sadler and “Love Me, I’m a Liberal” by Phil Ochs both demonstrate opposing views of war during the 1960s. The 1960s was the time of the Vietnam War, which was mainly about the fight against Communism since Communism was seen as a threat to capitalism. One one hand, Sadler gives a positive opinion regarding war as the word choice of his song suggest the soldiers fighting are brave, as evident by his repetition of “these [soldiers] are men, America’s best” (Sadler). This word choice contributes to a proud tone. Furthermore, Sadler states “[a Green Beret] has died for those oppressed” (Sadler).…

Children have more complexity than just getting sick and not appreciating school. In 2016 we have technology and have discovered different sciences that help us understand the human body and development so infants do not just get sick. Kids old enough to go to school have somewhat of an admiration for education considering the success in our world today and the influence of media. The third stage I highly disagree with because adolescents going through puberty experience hormones, not love and there is no romance involved in the lives of teenagers. The stage of soldier I believe could in a way be applicable to life today as of 2016 but in more of a metaphoric way.…
