Soldier 20/20 is the plan to help adapt our Army into becoming a stronger force. Our nation has been at war for the better part of the last 20 years. We have changed as an Army and adapted in multiple ways during this time. This program is being implemented to not only continue to expand, but to also fine tune the things that have changed. Some of the variables being looked at are women being able to serve in combat positions, soldiers unfit for their current Military Occupational Specialty (MOS), and making sure future soldiers are placed in an MOS that fits their capabilities. US Army Training Doctrine and Command (TRADOC) is currently focusing on two things to help expand upon these opportunities. They are trying to define the physical …show more content…
They are calling this the Occupational Physical Assessment Test (OPAT). The OPAT is made up of four different exercises. The exercises that are performed are the standing long jump, the seated power throw, the strength deadlift, and the interval aerobic run. When new recruits are planning on joining the Army, alongside the Armed Services Vocational Battery Test (ASVAB), they will be required to do this test as well. The main function of this addition is to prevent the current situation of having soldiers in MOS’ in which they are incapable of doing. If the soldier is capable of achieving the standard before leaving for basic training, then they will be more likely able to accomplish the difficult tasks of their MOS by the end of their Advanced Individual Training (AIT). Through integrating females in combat jobs, finding a better fit MOS for soldiers currently serving, and ensuring future soldiers are in jobs that they will be able to progress in, we make our forces stronger. This a step in the right direction as an Army that is constantly changing. Too many soldiers are currently serving in jobs that are not suited to them. As a result, we see far too many soldiers that are not ready to take on the challenges of their MOS as well as soldiers that are capable of achieving more than their MOS has to offer.
