Solar Energy System Advantages And Disadvantages

The word “photovoltaic” combines two terms – “photo” means light and “voltaic” means voltage. A photovoltaic system in this discussion uses photovoltaic cells to directly convert sunlight into electricity.
A photovoltaic (PV), or solar electric system, is made up of several photovoltaic solar cells. An individual PV cell is usually small, typically producing about 1 or 2 watts of power. To boost the power output of PV cells, they are connected together to form larger units called modules. Modules, in turn, can be connected to form even larger units called arrays, which can be interconnected to produce more power, and so on. In this way, PV systems can be built to meet almost any electric power need, small or large.

Systems also include structures that point them toward the sun and components that take the direct-current electricity produced by modules and "condition" that electricity, usually by converting it to alternate-current electricity. PV systems may also include batteries. These items are referred to as the balance of system (BOS) components.
Combining modules with BOS components creates an entire PV system. This system is usually everything needed to meet a particular energy demand, such as powering a water pump, the appliances and lights in a home, or—if the PV system is large enough—all the electrical requirements of a community.
There are currently four commercial production technologies for PV Modules:
Single Crystalline
This is the oldest and more expensive production technique, but it's also the most efficient sunlight conversion technology available. Module efficiency averages about 10% to

eg. If you had 4 solar panels in parallel and each was rated at 12 volts and 5 amps, the entire array would be 12 volts and 20 amps.
Series circuits have only one path for current to travel along. Therefore, all the current in the circuit must flow through all the loads. A series circuit is a continuous, closed loop - breaking the circuit at any point stops the entire series from operating. An example of a series circuit is a string of old Christmas lights - if one bulb breaks, the whole string turns off.

When wiring solar panels in a series, the voltage is additive, but the amperage remains the same. eg. If you had 4 solar panels in a series and each was rated at 12 volts and 5 amps, the entire array would be 48 volts and 5 amps.
Remember: just like batteries, solar panels have a negative terminal ( - ) and a positive terminal ( + ). Current flows from the negative terminal through a load (current consumed by a piece of equipment) to the positive terminal.

Many ideas and inventions have been used to make the use of our resources more efficient. Using solar power is one way we are using energy that is already there to our advantage. It is becoming more affordable, easier to obtain, and more popular within the country. Just in the past eight years alone, incorporation of solar power has increased from 1.2 gigawatts to thirty gigawatts (“Solar”). To give an example of the impact this has, that is enough energy to power about 5.7 million households in America.…

A DC circuit is a circuit in which current can only flow in one direction, constantly and with constant polarity. As opposed to alternating current, which changes its flow direction at regular intervals and can also increase or decrease in value. In this essay I will be mainly describing DC circuits wired in series, parallel, and series-parallel. In a DC series circuit the components are all wired together from end to end with the same amount of current flowing through each component.…

Do Solar Covers Really Work? Solar energy is increasing in popularity lately, especially when you consider the high cost of heating with electrical energy. Solar power comes from eliciting the sun rays to a silicon panel which transforms the sunlight into heat or energy. If you are thinking about purchasing a solar cover or a solar blanket, you should know a couple of things first.…

The benefits of using photovoltaic (PV) cells for the generation of electricity is that they provide green, renewable power through the use of solar energy. Also, by using these cells we are lessening the amount of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. PV panels require minimum operating costs and maintenance, only requiring occasional cleaning of the panels. Photovoltaic panels are long lasting and often come with warranties. Their lifespans typically exceed 25 years, and they only suffer an 18% efficiency loss after being used for 20 years.…

Solar powered photovoltaic (PV) panels collect solar energy. These panels consist of small cells that are wired together to form the module, and the modules are then wired together to form the panels. When a bunch of panels is located together, this is called an array (Davison). These arrays then absorb solar radiation and converts energy to electricity. During the collection of solar energy, no greenhouse gas emission is released.…

This experiment helped the team to get a better grasp on what conditions affect solar panels and which ones are able to work best and most efficient. With the rise of popularity and technology of solar panels it’s important to understand which conditions affect the efficiency of the solar panel. The conditions tested on the solar panel were various applied resistances, power output between a flat solar panel and “fisheye” solar panel, incident light angle, and efficiency of each solar panel. The maximum power output was obtained when the resistance on the panel was 10 ohms. Both solar panels generated the most power when the panel’s were perpendicular to the light source.…
