Sol Lewitt Essay

Sol LeWitt was a leader of the Conceptual Art Movement. According to page 240 in textbook Sol LeWitt he defined Conceptual Art as that which is made to engage the mind of views rather his eye or emotion. Sol LeWitt was born on September 9th, 1928. He was an American, he studied at Syracuse University, School of Visual Arts. He was known for painting, drawing, and sculpture. He became famous with his art in the late 1960s. He has been in several Museums for his work since 1965. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut to a family of jewish immigrants. He took art classes as a child also. He went to Europe and discovered the amazing art forms. Years later he served in the Korean War, was stationed in California, Japan, and Korea. He gained a lot of experience by working in Seventeen magazine and met a lot of important people. The people he met later in life became more important by time. In 1955, he worked as a designer of I.M. Pei for a year. Designs were a huge influence in his life. He was influenced by many but a major one was Eadweard Muybridge. He worked as a night receptionist/clerk in 1960 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He met a lot of people working here who later became famous artist, writer, and ect. These people influenced him a lot with his work as an artist. His work was very different and beautiful. He married the love of his life Carol Androccio. LeWitt was a teacher at many New York Schools, including New York University and the School of Visual Art. During the late 1960s. In 1980 he went to Spoleto, Italy. The late 1980s he moved to Chester, Connecticut his primary residence. His work was more of a two and three-dimensional work ranges on a wall drawing.
