Isabella Baumfree, or Sojourner Truth, was born sometime around 1797, the exact date was not recorded as most slaves birth dates weren’t. Baumfree lived in upstate New York with her parents James and Elizabeth Baumfree and 11 siblings. After the death of their slave owner, Charles Hardenberg in 1806, the Baumfrees were separated. Baumfree was sold at an auction along with a flock of sheep for $100 to John Neely.
