Sofia Coppola Transcendentalism

Improved Essays
This film is a biopic, and if anything, Sofia Coppola wanted to make the viewer question what is the convention on that basis. Marie Antoinette's honey-like ambiance is mainlined through Kirsten Dunst's acting proficiency, but the effervescence and flamboyance of the surroundings is all Coppola's glimmering vision. The garish landscapes, the pedantic aristocrats, the gnawing ennui of the main character all come in a brilliant conjunction that gives a deer-in-the-headlights portrayal of what was indeed an irrepressible personality. What's so great about Coppola's aforementioned work is how the unconventionalism is streamlined by the dissidence from the drab pieces of biographical films to date that pose a case of despondency in their whereabouts.

As in transcendentalism, I do see some of the ten tenets that I need to work on as an individual. Some of the things that I do make my life feel really difficult and complex.…

Antoinette ‘belongs to no one and belongs nowhere’ and as she does not fall into the category of the coloniser or the colonised, she attempts to mimic both. She cannot be accepted into either the black or white society, as symbolically shown when Tia steals her dress, and she is forced to fit into one that ‘tore as [she] forced it on’ (p. 11), and again when Rochester notices that the white dress he ‘had admired […] had slipped untidily over one shoulder and seemed too large for her.’ (p. 80) The dresses represent the category she is attempting to mimic, but neither fits.…

There has always been an argument on how the way you dress is typically the way that you usually feel or even the way you want other people to perceive you. Margery Kempe had an anomalous, yet complicated technique of explaining, way of showing to the audience what she was feeling or what she was trying to convey to the reader. Margery Kempe created this biography that has it’s own way of making the audience understand the way she went throughout her life. Brought to my attention when trying to break this book down, I fathomed she is a changed woman from the beginning of the book to the end of the book and an immense hint to this theory comes from the idea of the color of clothes she wears. So, the importance of the colors gold, white and black…

Transcendentalism is the belief that the whole universe lives inside you, and that intuitive thought is the primary form of knowledge. There is five tenets of transcendentalism which are free thought, confidence, non-conformity, self-reliance and nature. The source I chose to read about that has some examples of the five tenets of transcendentalism is a poem called “After School Special” by Suzy Kassem which is about Suzy writing a letter to her elementary school teacher Mr. Schneider. She writes about how her days at school were like and her opinion on the education she got from his teaching. The “After School Special” shows transcendentalism throughout Suzy’s poem by stating her opinion on the education showing confidence in her believing…

To some, she is considered the most agreeable and prestigious woman to ever step foot on the Earth. To others, she is thought of as the most venomous and intrusive lady to ever live. The imperious Lady Catherine de Bourgh, one who places herself above all the rest, plays a somewhat smaller role in the 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Pride & Prejudice”, but her exceptional character and qualities stand out immensely over the others. Even though she only appears occasionally, her intricate traits and characteristics are able to capture the audience's attention almost immediately. Her wealth, portrayal, language, social status all play a vital role in the development of her character, and a further unpacking of her lifestyle and social position…

Thesis: Wes Anderson manipulates Mise-en-scene in The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) by using color, décor, costume, to show the development of relationships, and give an insight into characters and the film’s contrast of a family that appears to be perfect, but is very dysfunctional. Costumes like Margot’s, and Chase’s give insight into the characters personality, and their current emotions towards the main events. Margot’s costume; a Blue or Red tennis dress often accompanied by a big fur coat that matches her hair color. The coat acts like a protection against others she’s uncomfortable with seeing her vulnerable side, and acts as a way to distance herself from others. The tennis dress represents her interest for her adopted brother Richie, and the color of the dress represents a person she’s thinking about.…

Throughout the 19th century, many writers emerged who strongly urged people to do what they pleased, be individuals, live simply, and experience life to its fullest potential. These writers, including Emerson, Whitman and Thoreau, believed in an enlightened way of life and spiritual being. Hi Colby, I enjoyed reading your post as I had similar ideas. I think the biggest part of the transcendentalism movement is indeed individualism as it is what seems to be stressed the most. I also felt that our previous readings were aimed towards religions but the current readings did the opposite as they leaned towards the individual’s thoughts and beliefs. Another big trait I saw that also includes individualism is philosophy, how one views nature and the world.…

The (2006) movie Marie Antoinette depicts the lifestyle of the Queen of France and her ultimate fall through total disconnect from her subjects. This movie visually displays the decadent self-indulgence enjoyed by the French Monarchy at the expense of their people. One scene of Petit Trianon [Fig 12] demonstrates the Queen and her friends basking in a privileged idea of being “one with nature” as advocated by French Philosopher Rousseau. Most importantly is the scene showing class disconnections, and the realities of farm-based labour; servants tending to this fantasy-based countryside cottage. Another scene depicts the servants cleaning eggs for the Queen to collect, exposing her fantasy-driven view of nature and ultimate disconnection with the realities of it.…
