Sodomite Research Paper

A few years back, some gay friends of mine and I were out at a bar having a good time. As the night progressed, we moved to some fun on the dance floor. Immediately a very hostile man approached my gay friend. He told him, “Get off the dance floor you sodomite!” Although this was a very aggravating experience and we ended up leaving the bar, not even then did I know the true meaning of a “sodomite”. I only had a vague understanding that it was penetration of the asshole, for lack of better words. However, I learned recently that perhaps the man’s interpretation of “sodomite” is what drove him to use the term in such a detestable way. Truly, over a long period the word “sodomite” describes the “awful” sexual act between homosexual men. Yet,

He argues that the creation of sodomites and prostitutes as socially less than was to distinguish men and women in a way that could not be turned over through gender equality. This distinction was successfully argued through the ways society regulated prostitution and condemned sodomites. Furthermore, not only does the evidence Trumbach provides effectively support his argument, it highlights the incorrect modern view of homosexuality being historically viewed as unnatural. He states that the negative view of male sexual desire for other men is actually due the Enlightenment ideas that triumphed individuality and equality. This illustrate this our perception of homosexuality is actually a socially constructed idea created to maintain male social dominance during a time of growing equality.…

The descendants of the conquered nyonyose (farmers) honor nature spirits that provide them with supernatural power to control the weather, disease, crop failure, and general well-being. These are the "invented spirits" that become important as the congregation faces a particular affliction and which decrease in influence as the problem is solved. These spirits are often represented by masks and figures that make them visible and concrete. The spirits themselves provide, through the diviner, the religious laws that govern the community and so provide a system of sacred rule.…

The usage of the words “gay” or “homo” in a negative way can further normalize heterosexism. Within chapter four, “Sentimental Education” of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, Yunior describes the dorm Oscar lives in as “Homo Hall” because it was full of “weirdos and losers and freaks and fembots”(Diaz, 170) (Fembots is a term often used to describe a feminist who is very adamant that women are oppressed in every situation they encounter.) Yunior’s use of the word Homo doesn’t refer to the sexual identities of the occupants but that they are stupid and do not fit properly into society. The use of the word homo as a way to refer to something as stupid or abnormal can lead people to think that queer people are stupid and abnormal. The word gay used as a substitute for stupid comes about again when Yunior and Melvin are talking to Oscar about the sign on his door.…

I struggled with Michael Warner’s “New English Sodom.” It was an interesting read, but it was hard to follow at several point, but the big takeaway that I got from it, is that, Sodom had not always had the sexual connotations that it has today, but rather that it was often employed in the rhetoric of collective judgement or punishment. England was compared to Sodom by Puritans who later moved to the United States, because they were both seen as degenerate and in need of condemnation and punishment. I found this incredibly interesting because Sodom is not alluded to for these purposes today, at least in my experience. Sodom and sodomy, tend to have legal air to them (as well as religious, of course), because of anti-sodomy laws.…

Sex has always been closely analyzed by society. There are so many rules and restrictions that have been placed upon it. This is especially true in 15th century Europe, but still remains true today. During the late 1400’s sodomy was a crime that could be committed by men and women, although the term was not used when in reference to women. Sodomy was somewhat of a new trend being recognized in women, but rising in popularity.…

There are about .97 males per every 1 female in America, which is statistically significant, putting me and my gender in a relative minority. The pure numerical difference bears no impact on my life, but for some reason, the shape of my genitalia has. Quite frankly, the "feminist movement" has gotten out of hand and lost sight of its original goals. I have actually been confronted solely because I exist in the state that I do, as a male. Just because some men have done shameful things in the past, does not mean that I, or anyone else should feel guilty about…

Gender and Sexuality from the Medieval to the 19th Century Throughout written history there have been a set of rules about typically anything one can fathom, from style of dress to the way one could worship, from who could own land to how a certain person could wear their hair. It is no surprise that these rules, enforced by society through social and judicial means, extended themselves into the subject of sexuality even if the terminology was different during the period. We get concepts of good and bad repeatedly throughout different times and different subjects simply to define what is acceptable, and unacceptable within a culture. Within the history of sexuality, from early medieval times to the late Victorian period (the 19th Century)…
