Introduction:

The “wonder” drug is what it was called. They believed it was like magic. It glowed in the night, it was presumed to cure cancer, it even was thought to give you eternal life, but for many innocent young girls in the 1920's, it was anything but wonderful and exquisite(Prisco). It was fatal. The chemical Radium and the Radium Girls is an event that not only affected the lives of many of these young girls but thousands of others globally who believed that radium was once one of the best drugs you could put into your body. I chose this topic after I went to the author who wrote the radium girls book talk here in Fort Collins at the Hilton hotel. Immediately my attention was grabbed and I knew at that moment I wanted to look more

Calcium makes up 65% of a bone in a human body. The other 35% is collagen.*refer to diagram and explain…) Collagen occurs throughout the body, but especially in the skin, bones, and connective tissues. In the dermis or the middle layer of skin, collagen helps form a fibrous network of cells called fibroblasts, upon which new cells can grow. It also plays a role in replacing and restoring dead skin cells(McIntosh). Bones in our body are living tissue. They have blood vessels and living cells, which help them to grow and repair themselves. Bones are made up of two types of tissue. A hard outer layer called cortical (compact) bone, which is strong, dense and tough and a spongy inner layer called trabecular (cancellous) bone (McIntosh). This network of trabeculae is lighter and less dense than compact bone. The bone is also made up of bone forming cells. Osteoblasts are responsible for bone matrix synthesis which produces the matrix for bone formation. Osteocytes are osteoblasts that become incorporated within the newly formed osteoid, which eventually becomes calcified bone. Osteoid is comprised of collagen and proteins. The hardness and rigidity of bone are due to the presence of mineral salt in the osteoid matrix, which is a crystalline complex of calcium and phosphate(Introduction to Bone Biology). Your body needs calcium and phosphate to make healthy and strong bones. Bones are the main storage site of calcium in the body. Bones are …show more content…
Back in the 1920’s radium was even sold to the public and was in mass production for people believed that radium was the path to “eternal life”. You could buy radium water, radium face cream, radium toothpaste, and even Radium Brand Creamery Butter. These products of radium gave people a healthful glow (Moore). Radium is used in x-rays also known as “X-radium” to help detect illnesses. It evens allows for cancerous tumors to be seen within an x-ray (Sabel). Not only can radium help in detecting cancer but also in curing cancer as well. Today, doctors use Radium 223 (a radioactive form of the metal radium) called Xofigo to treat prostate cancers that have spread to the bones as well as other cancers. Cancer cells are more likely to pick up the radium because they are more active than normal cells, The cancer cells receive a high dose of radiation, while the healthy cells receive low to no radiation at all. Almost all calcium is stored in bones and teeth, where it supports their structure and hardness (6). The body also needs calcium for muscles to move and for nerves to carry messages between the brain and every body part (6). In addition, calcium is used to help blood vessels move blood throughout the body and to help release hormones and enzymes that affect almost every function in the human body (6). Milk, yogurt, and cheese are the main food sources of calcium for the majority of people in the United States (6). To start, calcium is perhaps the most commonly linked component to higher bone density, and with just cause. Calcium is a versatile and important element. Connie Weaver, a member of the Institute of Medicine, explains, "Calcium is very critical for every body function-without it, your muscles won't contract and your nerves won't send messages. You either provide calcium through your diet or your body will strip it from your bone tissue. If your body robs the bones, they will weaken and break" ("Calcium Moves Front and Center").…
