Socratic Seminar Reflection

I had a lovely experience during the socratic seminar held in class. Prior to this seminar, I have participated in one in my Earth Science class. We had the guiding question of “Should we mine the moon?” and the class period went similar to ours. I personally adore public speaking when I am well prepared, so my contributions were out of pure enjoyment. I was at ease while formulating my thoughts and never felt under pressure. As a result, I look forward to my future participations in socratic seminars.
The class period was distinctively different from our previous classes. Rather than raising our hands, we were allowed to speak freely when we pleased. I appreciated the fact that I was able to speak when I wished, as long as I was not disturbing

Tom Baker Hour I had the opportunity to be able to attend the Tom Baker Hour with a special guest of Jack Jones. Right off the bat, I was comfortable with the topic of conversation whenever they introduced the candidates for the elevator pitch contest. In the classroom we went over what exactly an elevator pitch is and how helpful it is to have one in the future when networking. I really enjoyed watching a variety of people present their elevator pitches, some included CofC students and some were local businesses from the Charleston area.…

Socratic questioning dates back to the 5th century BC, when an Athenian named Socrates questioned his fellow people to deliver their knowledge of good or evil (Knezic et al., 2010). In this essay, I will compare two ways a Socratic method of questioning can be used in a modern classroom based on Gershon (2013) writing on tried and tested method on how to challenge and stretch your…

I personally felt as if I had good amount of questions that involved deeper thinking and would get the class to have an effective discussion. But there was one thing I definitely need to work on is.... after a classmate answers my question....instead of saying yes I agree..... I should put my own opinion and bring the discussion further. The notes "What is a Socratic Seminar? " there was a section labelled 'good discussion' and I think that was my biggest weakness.…

For me personally, the Socratic seminar did help with some of the topics we talked about like about school back then. In that time, a teacher could hit a student and it was okay and excepted it wasn’t really a big deal but now if a teacher hits a student they would get in trouble and possible loss their job. I also found it a bit weird these kids get so much freedom they get to leave school in the middle of the day to go home and eat lunch and then go back to school. In the Socratic seminar, we also talked about Miss. Caroline and how she is still really new to teaching.…

My grades this past year were and are not indicative of who I am as a student, or as a person in general. My junior year of high school, I decided to do PSEO, thinking it was an easy way to get credits for both high school and college. I did not realize the struggle I was going to have just trying to be accountable for myself during my senior year. My daily schedule consisted of work, soccer, managing the high school boy’s hockey team, volunteer work, spending time with my high school friends and taking college courses. I took the most challenging classes through Anoka-Ramsey Community College, thinking that like high school these would be the best for me.…

It has been a little over two months since I began my out of the classroom experience in the Shustova Chemistry lab. With many extractions, separations, Schlenk line setups, and NMR spectroscopies, I am feeling much more confortable preforming higher-level chemistry techniques all while upholding national safety standards. This sense of comfortableness did not come quickly. This is where the most challenging aspect of the Capstone Project comes into play. The challenge that I face when I go into lab twice a week is to feel confident with the procedures I have done before, and the slight tweaks I am told to make to hopefully reach the desired project.…

-----The summer semester for Humanities is coming to an end and I can personally say on my behalf that this was a learning experience that I will not forget. I know it sounds cheesy but this class was different in comparison to the other classes that I had previously taken before; in this class I was able to learn about several cultures their art, rituals, places of worship and music. I said this class was different because I had never actually spent that much time looking at other cultures nor taking the time to actually understand them, but for this summer class I was given the task to do it, and it soon didn’t feel like I was doing homework anymore because I was actually enjoying the work I was doing and the reading I was doing on the course…

It was during one of those debates the middle school class held every Wednesday at the academy I attended last summer. One week, our tutor Michael found that two more high schoolers besides me, who always participated, decided to join. He looked around the room and nonchalantly stated “I believe Aristocracy is the best form of government. Prove me wrong.”, and soon, I heard someone shout out “what’s aristocracy?”, fumbling on the pronunciation. After answering few questions and ignoring numerous complaints, he said “Convince me, that Democratic government is better.”…

As a new student in the college world, there are some things that I have been made aware of on the topic of your counseling services. I feel that you may be aware of the mental health crises on campuses across America, but not how drastic and impactful this issue is to the NMC students. As a concerned student, I feel that you are unaware of the impact you have to make changes to our campus. Which can help eliminate some contributing factors to the anxiety and depression students are facing. Making a simple change such as, hiring more campus counselors is enough to make a difference.…

Written language is a trait known to be only possessed by mankind. Although other species may have audible forms of communication, man is able to record and document his thoughts, feelings, or events that have unfolded in a way that can be viewed multiple times without him having to use his voice over and over. Literacy is a skill that adults in the United States are expected to have; but the level of your literacy says a lot about you and can have a tremendous impact on what career you end up in. For this reason, this college English class is a requirement for all those seeking a degree. Not only did I learn how to think of subjects and topics more objectively, but I learned a multitude of different modes and strategies I can employ in my writing.…

The evidence I have for the collegiate/peer feedback is the comment I received from the mentor teacher on my self-evaluation form, the self-evaluation form for the self-assessment/reflection, and 3 students surveys from each of the three classes that I taught for the student feedback (see Appendix 1). Area of strength An area of strength for my teaching practice would be the different teaching methods and multiple forms of literacy that I’ve included in the lessons, as I have been trying to do a different activity for each lessons, or includes visual, music, and videos in the lessons to give students different approaches to the contents. My mentor teacher commented the different tasks as “interesting and useful” for the students. The students…
