Socratic Seminar Experience

As a freshman walking through the doors of high school on her first day, it was terrifying. I remember the anxiety crawling up my spine as I walk quickly to every class, hoping not to get lost. I thought that it would be an easy year because the older kids I knew had given the impression that it was—but I had missed a vital part completely. They had probably said that it would be an easy year, compared to the rest. Because of this, I had prepared myself badly. I didn’t study much, thinking that it wouldn’t affect my grades considerably, but I was wrong. However, at the same time, I had developed as a student and as an individual. Throughout the year, I have developed as a communicator from the socratic seminar, a creative and critical thinker by making the clay whistles in art, and as a collaborator from my March Madness project in history. …show more content…
It was about the book Whirligig, and I remember being really nervous for it. I recall stumbling over my words a lot and not talking as much as I should have. Our second and last socratic seminar was about the Exhibition of Learning and I think that I did better with that one because I had more opinions. My tongue didn’t trip over mere syllables as much and my confidence was heightened as well. I felt calmer, my heartbeat wasn’t pounding in my ears, and that felt refreshing. I had practiced in front of my friends, often reading aloud the essays I wrote and the speech for the EoL and I pondered over the idea that doing those things had prepared me too. The first socratic seminar was the control of a science experiment, it’s what I compare my results to, and many times, I am satisfied with how far I have come as a

The thing I most enjoyed in the socratic seminar was how easily the ideas flowed. Our class isn’t a shy class so mostly everyone contributed and the discussion time wasn’t wasted on awkward silences. Our class not being shy helped the seminar be successful, we were talkative and brought up interesting points that made you think. Having pre written questions and answers helped too so you could refer to your own notes to add to a comment or answer a question effectively. I feel like the only thing that could be improved would be everyone in the class responding.…

For me personally, the Socratic seminar did help with some of the topics we talked about like about school back then. In that time, a teacher could hit a student and it was okay and excepted it wasn’t really a big deal but now if a teacher hits a student they would get in trouble and possible loss their job. I also found it a bit weird these kids get so much freedom they get to leave school in the middle of the day to go home and eat lunch and then go back to school. In the Socratic seminar, we also talked about Miss. Caroline and how she is still really new to teaching.…

The day of August 27, 2012 I was officially titled a freshman. One look down those unknown red and blue walls, will forever change my perspective of high school. There was an instant moment of disbelief in my freshman, I was terrified, and no thought came to mind as to how I was going to survive high school for the next four years. Of course I knew it'll be different from my tiny middle school, but will it be like the cliché movies about the upcoming of age, or resemble the happiest times of life. From that first day, I knew I wasn’t like everyone else.…

“ was strong, and thought provoking. The class had so much to talk about it, since there were two sides. It seemed somewhat like a debate, which is fun! If we knew the questions that were going to be asked, then we could spend more time thinking about that question, thus being able to discuss more. Another bothersome thing about the seminar was the fact that the outer circle cannot speak at all.…

The first day back to school has finally come again. As you walk down the freshly waxed halls, the smell of cleaning agents gives you a fresh clean feeling. When you arrive to class everyone is quiet.…

Early Graduation High school, otherwise known as the “best four years of your life.” But why can it not be the best three years of your life, or maybe simply three years of your life (rhetorical question)? While these four years of dances, football games, parties, and homework can truly be the best four years of someone’s life that may not be the case for everyone. In a world dominated by the acceptance and flexibility of standards, it seems that the educational system shows little adjustability in the time required for high school graduation. Teenage pregnancy, bullying, and extreme intelligence have always been prevalent in the United States, and these cases have created a need for shortened high school careers.…

This was reinforced by feedback I received which said “you seemed slightly nervous at first but then as confidence grew the teaching became increasingly better.” I felt this was due to a lack of preparation and could have easily been resolved by practice and repetition. Also, next time I will prepare some notes to prompt me and to ensure I do not forget to mention any important details the students may…

I also, do not like public speaking and I knew this would restrict me from fully participating.
