Socratic Seminar: A Class Analysis

Decent Essays
The thing I most enjoyed in the socratic seminar was how easily the ideas flowed. Our class isn’t a shy class so mostly everyone contributed and the discussion time wasn’t wasted on awkward silences. Our class not being shy helped the seminar be successful, we were talkative and brought up interesting points that made you think. Having pre written questions and answers helped too so you could refer to your own notes to add to a comment or answer a question effectively. I feel like the only thing that could be improved would be everyone in the class responding.

A question I answered was “How are Romeo and Juliet different to teens today?” I found that question easy to respond to because of the vast differences between today's teens and Romeo

Socratic questioning dates back to the 5th century BC, when an Athenian named Socrates questioned his fellow people to deliver their knowledge of good or evil (Knezic et al., 2010). In this essay, I will compare two ways a Socratic method of questioning can be used in a modern classroom based on Gershon (2013) writing on tried and tested method on how to challenge and stretch your…

I believe that my group and I did really well in the Socratic Seminar because we had strong responses and textual evidence, and I won the MVP award. During this seminar, my group and I wanted our seminar to have deep questions, highlevel responses, polite interactions with our fellow speakers, and finally a balanced amount of speaking. In the second half of our seminar, the question was asked if we thought that animal farm would collapse. While there was many great thoughts being mentioned, Mia firmly said,” I do not believe that animal farm will collapse because on the sheet in the overview of the russian revolution, it said that the collapse communism in russia was in 1991, but the book was written in 1945.…

My question was “ What did you learn through this discussion?”. I think that I should have concluded by saying we have learned about respect and values, and how we may not all have the same ideas but can open up to one another. Overall, I think that the socratic seminar went fairly well, I need to adjust the questions and make the rules clear before having the read…

I personally felt as if I had good amount of questions that involved deeper thinking and would get the class to have an effective discussion. But there was one thing I definitely need to work on is.... after a classmate answers my question....instead of saying yes I agree..... I should put my own opinion and bring the discussion further. The notes "What is a Socratic Seminar? " there was a section labelled 'good discussion' and I think that was my biggest weakness.…

The Bartebys of the Classroom The Bartlebys of the education system are students who “prefer not to” do their work. I have never understood why someone would come to class and do nothing and expect a good grade. I would assume the student wants to be successful and pass the class they have chosen to take. This can be an issue for composition teachers or teachers in general. The author in the reading nails it on the head when describing the characteristics of a Bartleby student.…

In these past few years, people alway try to find different ways to increases the student’s performance in the classroom. For example, do not allow students to use electronics in the classes, strict on attendance, or ask students to take many tests. One of the reason that people think students cannot perform as good as they can is because of the class size. How can the class size influence the student’s performance? Right now, in a lot of schools, the principal and all of the administration in the school trying to reduce the class size to less than 40 students per classroom.…

Moderators: Moderators are needed to keep children safe and happy. Without, moderators the children would be playing outside, in an empty parking lot, all by themselves. If one of them got hurt or a stranger came to play with them, they would not be able to comprehend the situation and figure what to do. With the help of a moderator, the children do not have that worry on their heads and can play peacefully. Times I have been a peacemaker: I helped solve a conflict between two of my friends by making them talk it out, instead of ignoring the situation.…

Yet, I ultimately learned that I was not just a facilitator, I was also part of the group, I trusted my peers and the feeling seemed reciprocal so there was nothing to fear. Essentially, I now feel ready to incorporate theory and feedback from my seminar group into three main areas of group facilitation: addressing silent members, summarizing main themes throughout the discussion, and exploring similarities between the members of a group to enhance universality and cohesiveness. Overall, I believe the discussion went well since it did not feel as if we, the co-facilitators, were leading the discussion, we were merely providing the members with the tools to enhance their self-efficacy as a group. While we presented the main themes, the group itself eventually elaborated their own focus as the discussion developed and they shared their experiences.…

College students focus on the content presented to the in their courses like understanding the difference between mitosis and meiosis or what exactly Plato meant in his writings. Rarely do students take the time to step back from their studies and analyze the organization of their classes and how that may affect their performance in the course. It is extremely interesting to get a chance to look back on the courses I have taken and analyze their culture rather than content. I will be looking at the dynamics of three different classes, one for each year that I have completed at Xavier, and assessing the influence of each setting on the students. The names of the professors have been changed and I will be using feminine pronouns to refer…
