Humans do not have an innate knowledge of what to do, but rather listen and follow the cultures of others. These beliefs vary depending on your youth and who influences you: from your parents to your teachers. No matter what, Socrates and all people must learn how to think or act from the ideas of others and the cultures that surround them. And most of the time, these cultures and ideas are what is morally right. In The Stranger by Albert Camus, Camus describes a man who deviates from the norm. A man with little to no emotion, Meursault, the main character, trudges through his life with an indifferent outlook. Even though he knows the cultures rules and how he should act, Meursault doesn’t follow the ideas and perceptions that other people have taught to him. He is indifferent to his mother’s death and eventually murders someone without any remorse and regret. His insensitivity and indifference from the culture leads to his wrongdoings and what most people see as morally incorrect. Here, the culture and general idea shared by others is the best choice of action and what is seen as correct. If Meursault was to follow the advice and culture of most people, he would have not committed the crimes. The advice and ideas of friends or most people generally most morally correct for everybody and that society.
