In the essay "I am Writing Blindly" by Roger Rosenblatt, he describes the great value writing has on people. Rosenblatt claimed that "we exist by storytelling- by relating our situations..," which is what makes us have freedom and have the ability to communicate with people even after death. The usage of the different stories in the essay portrays the necessity of writing, that'd be before dying to leave a mark of remembrance or to prove a point by storytelling. Therefore Rosenblatt's examples of why people write and he's consecutive structure of writing makes his essay enjoyable to read, although he lacks clarity in the beginning of his essay and a few paragraphs. When Rosenblatt describes the JAL airliner that went down in 1985 and the Warsaw…

Chris McCandless, a.k.a. Alex Supertramp, was a man who decided to abandon the usual materialistic lifestyle to search for the actual meaning of life while roaming in the margins of society and in nature. In 1992, he met his end after living alone for months in the wilderness of Alaska. A few years later, Jon Krakauer decided to tell his story through the book Into the Wild, which was written based on interviews with family members and people who Chris met through his voyage, as well as on a journal he kept. Alternatively, in the novel Disgrace, J. M. Coetzee writes the story of David Lurie, a fictional character, and allows the readers to have a great insight into his personality and thoughts, but only assumptions regarding the intentions…
More than 2 in 3 adults and about one-third of children are considered to be overweight or obese. In his article “What You Eat Is Your Business,” Radley Balko claims the idea that we should take responsibility of what we eat instead of blaming the government for it. Balko argues that the way the government is spending a lot of money for anti obesity measure isn’t the right approach to prevent obesity. In contrast, in David Zinczenko’s article “Don’t Blame The Eater,” he insists how the fast food industries are to be blamed for the problem of obesity in America. He explains how the rate of diabetes in children has dramatically increased because of the negative effects of the fast food restaurants.…
The essay titled Writing, in the book The World Is a Text, by Patty Strong, the autothor explains how she believes "writing is thinking". She informs us how in highschool writing, students do not, as well are not, expected to put as much thinking into their writing compared to students that attend college. Strong points out that though teachers those of a college do care that their students do well, the students are on their own when it comes to their success. College students are expected to understand that their success is in their own hands therefore their writing better show that success is what they are aiming for. After reading this essay and understanding Strongs views on writing, I see writing in a different way.…
Author, Stuart Ewen, in his essay “Chosen People” talks about how the middle class has fooled America. The middle class is presented as an imaginary structure in American society. The middle class is an illusion to Americans; it has changed the meaning of the American dream. Ewen throughout his essay shows how the middle class was created in the United States. Ewen then moves the industrial revolution created, such as the perceptions.…
Rod Ewdish 12/13/16 English 120 Professor Progar Men in Society Men go so far to prove what they fear than acquire what they truly desire. Throughout life, men are taught to be tough and to not express their true thoughts or emotions. The article “Bros before hoes,” written by Michael Kimmel, an American Sociologist specialized in gender studies, goes along and asks a number of men from different campuses and states what it simply means to be a man. What sorts of phrases or thoughts come to mind when someone instructs them to be a man. Richard T. Evans, a researcher of interdisciplinary studies, in “Faggots, Fame and Firepower” describes how most male shooters have been dismissed by their classmates/peers, both before and after their crime,…
Every day people witness the horrors and atrocities in society caused by differing human ideologies, but what would it be like in a world where a computer could solve all of the humanity’s problems? The short story, “All the Troubles of the World,” by Isaac Asimov is a story about the super computer, Multivac and its desires to die because it can no longer stand carrying the weight of society’s problems. In the story, the author effectively expresses the theme of the story which is that no being is superior enough to solve all of the world’s problems through the use of literary devices such as setting, narration, and characterization . An additional eminent literacy device Asimov uses is the description of the setting of the story.…
As we go our separate ways and begin this journey of the rest of our lives, remember these words by Neil Gaiman. “Now go, and make interesting mistakes, make glorious and fantastic mistakes. Break rules. Leave the world more interesting for your being here.” Because each and every one of us will make mistakes.…
Imagine a world where everyone has technology, whether it’s a cell phone, laptop, tablet, you name it, everyone has it. Even those living in the far away depths of America, and those who can’t even afford free school lunch. This is hard to image and poses many questions, but in general, it is unrealistic. “Our Future Selves,” an article written by Eric Schmidt and Jared Cohen, informs readers on the importance of technology in revolutionizing our today. Both authors are highly involved with the technical world as Schmidt is the former CEO of Google and Cohen is currently the director of Google Ideas.…
The article under analysis is "Critical Thinking? You Need Knowledge" by author Diane Ravitch. Ravitch presents the idea that for people need to learn to value knowledge as it's required to think critically and it's an important aspect for people to have. I, as a reader and critique, agree with her point that to further grasp anything we must learn about it first. Ravitch's Idea that "Thinking critically involves comparing and contrasting and synthesizing what one has learned."…

According to Laurence Shames, “Americans have always been optimists, and optimists have always liked to speculate” (90). Shames starts to talk about how Texans would purchase some land, put a main street on it, building some structures and call it a town all hoping for the railroad to come through their town. Every single person who tried to do this we're optimists. In the article “The More Factor” they did this for two reasons: to make money and for America to keep booming like it was. I think that this was the one way that America was really going to take off and turn into the power house country they could be.…
“How-and How Not-to love mankind”, written by the English writer, retired prison doctor, Theodore Dalrymple, is an inspiring and revealing article. Through this essay, the author has explained the welfare of humanity and love to mankind. He wrote that everyone in the earth declare that they care the poor people and show humanity to them. Even the criminals or killers also claim that they are doing such things for the sake of people and to protect them. It seems as if there are different versions of good and bad.…
Plato’s Socrates Trilogy was play about the last days of Socrates. It consists of the three parts: Phaedo, The Apology, and Crito, in which they document each part of the trial, including his defense, the verdict of the jury, and the judgment of court. The story that I wanted to focus my essay is Plato’s The Apology. The overall theme I saw throughout the play, but emphasized in The Apology was wisdom. The theme of wisdom is also present in the novel’s visual depiction: Socrates by Robert Rossellini.…
