PHL-150-D080 Philosophy Test 3 Question 1: While Socrates and Cephalus discuss the merits of old age, the conversation quickly evolves into a discussion of what it means to be just. Cephalus argues that justice solely means always being honest and living up to your legal obligations . Socrates argues against this stating that it would be wrong to return a weapon to a mentally-ill man because while it indeed legally belongs to him it would be putting others lives at jeopardy. Once we have stepped behind this boundary we are able to think freely about the nature of social justice. Rawls’ suggests we think this way because by thinking from our emotionally charged subjective biases the truth may be blurred and one may put their values to an advantage in a matter involving who may be guilty or innocent. The idea is to think from pure logic and not be blinded by who we are individually. The two principles consist of the Principle of Equal Liberty and the Difference Principle. The Principle of Equal Liberty follows the egalitarian concept that each person has an equal right to the most extensive liberties compatible with similar liberties for all. In layman's terms meaning that who you go to bed as every night should not affect the fundamental liberties all humans are afforded e.i “Liberty and Justice for All”. The second principle, The Difference Principle, must pass two conditions, a) the project will make life better for those at the least advantage and b) must allow access to the privileged positions regardless of discrimination according to irrelevant criteria. The Difference Principle emphasizes equity over equally because if you treat everyone equally but not help those in greater need true equality isn’t meet.
