Sociopathic Tendencies in Alex DeLarge from A Clockwork Orange
It is known that A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess is a very disturbing book and does not have the best reputation out there in terms of books. But this is a very good book that teaches you to go outside the norm to create a truly gripping and stunning story. In this book Burgess introduces the character Alex DeLarge; a 15 year old boy who enjoys all the worst things a young boy can love: Ultra-violence, Alex loves Ultra-violence whether it be beating the snot out of a old drunk on the side of the road, or breaking into a house to destroy a writers prized possessions and the book that he was creating. With is break-ins and physical assaults on various people throughout the whole story. To start with, Alex, and his “droogs” meet a old man singing or babbling drunkenly of old songs passed down from his fathers beforehand. After he is ruffed up by Dim(one of Alex's “droogs”) he says “Go on, do me in, you bastards are cowards, I don't want to live anyway, not in a stinking world like this one.” Alex begins to retort after Dim had layed off a bit saying “Oh. And what's stinking about it?” in which the man replies “ It's a stinking world because it lets the young get on to the old like you done, and there's no law nor order no more.” and continues his statement “It's no world for any old man any longer, and that means that I'm not one bit scared of you, my boyos, because I'm too drunk to feel the pain if you hit me, and if you kill me I'll be glad to be dead.”(Burgess 11). This states what sort of world they live in. A dystopian world with very small amounts of law. But when they are caught the punishment is severe. As well that Alex and his gang like to feel in power over people. Such as their next
