Sociology and Me
Through sociology I have learned many ways to examine my life, and the different ways in which I identify myself. There are many factors that have affected who I am; social class, gender, and aspects of my family. Looking at what has influenced my growing up also helps paint a better picture as to who I hope to be, as well as how I want my life to look. For example, the job I want and the family I would like to have.
Inequality
Growing up, my family was part of what is considered America’s lower class. While there are situations much worse than what my mother and I had, we were nowhere near middle class. My mother and I were both on Medicaid health insurance, and under food stamps. We had housing assistance that handled most of the rent, and if my grandmother had not babysat me for free, my mom would not have been able to afford childcare while she was at work. Though my mother still resides in the lower class, since moving to a rural area when I was in middle school, she was able to move up slightly. She no longer had to worry about childcare, and rent was low enough that she could afford it on her own. I currently reside in the middle class, if only because I live with my partner who has a comfortable earning. As I do not get paid very much, and cannot work full time because of school, on my own I am not very well off. Hopefully upon graduation I will be able to reside as a middle class citizen on my own accord. If I am still with my partner, with our…
