The first document that I chose is titled “Sociology of Racism” written by Matthew Clair of Havard University and Jeffrey Denis of McMaster University. I wanted to use this paper because it discusses the origin of racism and how people come to possess it. According to Clair and Denis, racism roots from the thought that a certain group is superior to the other because small differences such as hair color, skin tone, and facial structure. Racism is very different from racial discrimination and inequality but really it is the root of difference from one group to another. Racism is defined as a term that describes peoples and societies in the way we now understand ethnicity or national identity. This definition …show more content…
As time went on, the definition changed somewhat to include more information such as different classes of plants, animals and of course humans. According to the research of Clair and Denis, “Race become understood as a biological, or natural categorization system of the human species”. Clair and Denis really did a lot of research into many different parts and perspectives of what is race and how did it evolve. Intellectually, race wasn’t really studied that much because most of the time they maintained racist attitudes and incorporated racist assumptions into their explanations of racial group differences in social outcomes. During the nineteenth century, racism was everywhere. It pervaded all societies and it wasn’t for the good. It was used to discriminate against people who are classified as a minority group.
The second document that I am using to support my hypothesis is an article written by Shaun Harper titled, “Race …show more content…
The synapse of this article really consists of the thought of how was prejudice was created and how it has evolved over the centuries. He automatically starts out with the proverb, “Familiarity breeds contempt”. This is somewhat true because it really should mean that the more that a person lives and breathes in a certain area and culture the more they will get used to that sort of living. We depend on that sort of living. It makes people feel more comfortable to be living in an area that they are used to. Technically what this means is that to really exist society must be familiar with the culture around them. Allport writes more about how a child at a young age understands that he or she belongs to various groups of people. This is very apparent to this child. Young children have a pure perspective when it comes to differences. They notice many things that adults seem to become biased towards because of the evolved mindset that adults have towards many topics of conversation. He also discussed the definition and the significance of an “In-Group”. In today’s society, “in-groups” are somewhat popular especially around schools but what it means is that there a certain group of individuals that think that they are more superior over everyone else. In some cases, within this group there are some that are peer pressured into doing certain deeds in order to be part of the “in-group”. These groups
