Sociologists define agents of socialization as people or groups that affect our self-concept, attitudes, behavior, and other views toward life. It can also be defined as individuals, social groups and institutions that teach us about our culture. Throughout my life many different agents of socialization have influenced me and contributed toward my development. The agents of socialization that most impacted my life as a high school student and now as a college student have remained unchanged. The specific categories are family, religion, school, and peers, mass media and work.
My family has always had the largest influence on my life. Both of my parents worked hard to provide for my older sister and I. We would probably be considered a middle class family that lives a typical life in a suburb of Atlanta, GA. The thing that stands out most to me about my family is the support, encouragement and belief in my dream to become a successful student-athlete. Once they knew that I was serious about my goal, there was nothing they did not do to support me. My dad coached me from my six year old church league basketball team through my 10th grade club team. He also served as my trainer which meant hours of his time were spent practicing and working out with me to help develop my athletic skills.
