Sociological Theory Of Gun Violence

The article; “The sociological explanation for why men in America turn to gun Violence”, is about the theory behind the mass shooting, which took place on October 7th, 2017, in Las Vegas. The suspect Stephen Paddock, is now known for being one of the worst mass shooter in American history. The authors of the article, Tristan Bridges and Tara Leigh Tober, reported Paddock killed roughly 58, and injured approximately 500 people (Tristan Bridges, 2017; Tristan Bridges, 2017). The sociologist in the editorial, discovered a connection between mass shooter, social identity, masculinity, and gun violence in possible contributing factors towards the incident in Las Vega (Tristan Bridges, 2017; Tristan Bridges, 2017).

Women are less likely to commit a mass shooting, because they do not have the same behavioral drives that men do. Traditionally in American, men are known for like being more aggressive than women, or being superior (Tristan Bridges, 2017; Tristan Bridges, 2017). In a way I feel this is stereotypical in the article, because there is nothing to say a female could not commit a mass shooting, in fact, I believe as gender roles switches in the future generations we may see a increase of women in gun violence.
My reactions after reading the article, is making me question is gun ownership, mental health, masculinity, and other psychological influence really to causing mass shooters? Or, is our society just going down the gutter!... I feel, yes and no. I’m on the edge, since there are still missing details of the Las Vegas shooting. We may never understand what caused Stephen Paddock to go off on a rampage and harm insistent people. However, learning from this incident will teach us as a society, how to hopefully stop, prevent, and reduce the gun violence in

I’m not for gun control or against it. I still feel people have a right to keep guns with limitations. The United States for instance doubles in gun violence rates more than any other nation making us the most venerable. The easy access to guns in the U.S. make me worried on who’s hands they are in. My thought is when a person is buying a gun, are they a stable person, what’s does the criminal background look like, do they have unusual behaviors. Unfortunately, these kinds of evaluations don’t always take place when buying a gun. I myself own multiple guns, but I use mine for hunting and hunting only. I don’t drive around with them or carry them in my pockets. I feel carrying a loaded gun in public belongs in the hands of law enforcement. Although there had been past cases were a stranger did use their personal weapon to help someone in danger. My sympathy goes out the victims’ in Las Vegas, which I do not have the solution to stopping mass shooting problems in America. I feel gun violence would decrease if we limit gun ownership, enforce harder laws for owning guns would help end the numbers of guns available to help mass

In the United States of America women are more likely to become victims of sexual violence. The National Institute of Justice Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 1998 study found that “18 percent of surveyed women…experienced a completed or attempted rape at some time in their life” (Tjaden and Thoennes 3). Consequently, with statistics like these and personal experience Linda Hasselstrom tackles the controversial subject of gun carrying by women. She uses her article “A Peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carries a Gun” to argue her take on the subject. Hasselstrom appeals to an audience who might not understand her decision for carrying a gun and might find the subject controversial.…

Rahilly ‘Gender Truth Regime’ Rahilly (2015) adapts Foucalt’s concept of a ‘truth regime’ to explain the ideological prevalence of the gender binary in modern western society. She argues that at an individual, interactional, structural and ideological level, the notion of sex and gender being intertwined has a pervasive effect. Weaving this with West and Zimmerman’s (1987) concept of ‘doing gender,’ she likens parents’ resistance to the gender binary to Bernstein and De la Cruz’s (2009) description of Hapa activists’ challenging of the US monoracial truth regime. Both the monoracial and gender truth regime promote a discourse of erasure of that which defies binaries – mixed race and trans individuals, in this case.…

In this New York Times article Erik Eckholm uses mass shootings such as the Columbine, Virginia tech and Sandy Hook shootings to demonstrate the need for stricter gun laws. The writing of this article was sparked by the most recent shooting in Roseburg, Oregon. By using these tragedies along with very supportive statistics he is able to persuade the reader to believe that the current laws and restrictions simply are not enough. 90 people a day are killed by guns, two thirds of that statistic are suicides. This goes to show that Eckholm understands that sometimes “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.”…

To oversimplify, matters surrounding privacy can be color coded. There are some issues that are very black and white related to the need to “violate” privacy. However, there are also quite a few gray areas where more research needs to be conducted and statistics gathered to formulate guidelines to determine when it is indeed necessary. Privacy in general needs to be treated in a way that is different from other rights and based on the serious consequences of not revealing facts that would be considered “private”.…

The op-ed piece “Mass shootings are an American problem. There’s an American solution.” was written in response to the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. On September 30, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada, a gunman opened fire on attendees at a country music concert, killing 58 and injuring well over 500. Published just four days later, at a time when emotions are heightened and people are searching for answers to the questions of how and why such a horrific event could occur, Chris Murphy appeals to that very emotion in this piece.…

Specially in the moment when we hear of another mass shooting, no one is to blame but the people who pulled on the trigger. When you sit down and think about it leaving all of your feelings out of it and just looking at the facts you can clearly see what the problem is. There is a saying that goes, if guns are outlawed then only outlaws will have…

Last week was the eight year anniversary of the tragedy at Columbine High School in Littleton CO. On April 20, 1999, two Columbine students came to school intending on killing as many people that get in their way, if that means by a gun, a bomb made out of a propane tank, or any of their grenades or devices made by hand. Twelve students and one teacher died because of the horror caused by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Eric and Dylan later committed suicide, but who are these kids? Another incident in Colorado had taken place just a few years ago, James Holmes (pictured above) killed 12 and injured over 140 people while entering an Aurora movie theatre and opening fire on the public.…

The first item that we have to clarify is what classifies a mass murder. The definition that we will use is a perpetrator who intentionally kills at least three victims other than him or her self in a single incident. We will narrow the scope to those who used firearms as their choice of weaponry in order to exclude bombings, car accidents, and planes. The results were that from 1949 to 1998 there were thirty mass murderers. Out of those thirty twenty of them were committed during 1985.…

Also new laws need to be made to help keep a threshold on the capacity of guns allowed to be kept for personal use, there should be no reason to have multiple weapons unless they have a significant purpose such as hunting or personal security. Without the proper training any attempt to protect your self with a firearm could go wrong in a number of different ways. A study conducted by Philip J. Cook revealed that criminals are actually less likely to want to hurt someone if they were carrying a firearm. Using the gun as only a threat to get what they want without having to physically injure someone is their goal. Crime is always likely to happen no matter what laws or rules are in place, but if a crime were to occur it would be more beneficial that it happened without anyone getting…
