Introduction
In the film, The Blind Side, the story is a real life account of Oher’s journey from being homeless and broke to playing for the NFL. This film also shows how his relationship and adoption from Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, played by Sandra Bullock and Tim Mcgraw, gave him the strength and tenacity to overcome what most only dream of doing. Released in 2009, this film was directed by John Lee Hancock and grossed over 300 million dollars. “The story of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All American football player and first round NFL draft pick with the help of a caring woman and her family” (Imbd.com). However, In Michael Oher’s case, his hopes were simply to find a warm place to sleep at night. By chance, he was pummeled into high class, or dare I say, hyper high class, overnight. Upward social mobility is defined as movement up the social class ladder (Henslin,10.4). Oher experienced upward social mobility faster than the average individual experiences, unless say someone win’s the lottery. His life changed from sleeping in the gym, on benches, to his own bedroom with his own bed, which he stated he had never had one before, and was 17 years old. He went from carrying an extra pair of shorts in a grocery bag to a full closet of clothing. As you can see, in this situation, Oher’s upward social mobility is caused from education, which is typical in most social mobility, and also his adoption into a wealthy …show more content…
Michael Oher is a quiet individual with a lot to say. He loves with forgiveness, fights with tenacity and struggled with humility. “Consequently, we need to use all three theoretical lenses to analyze human behavior. By combining the contributions of each, we gain a more comprehensive picture of social life” (Henslin, 1.7). The Blind Side afforded us the view of all three perspectives, symbolic interactionism, functionalism, and conflict theory. Michael Oher’s journey through his young life allowed us to see him transition from rich to poor, hated to love, nobody to a star. It is through our own fortune that we can witness this through the lens of sociological

This is because the reading states that “The overwhelmingly White, blockbuster film industry was busy thinking up more new ways for Brown folks to help less-Brown ones, and American White men were getting a little nervous about their place on the top of the heady New World Order” (Colombe, 2002, p. 1). This can be compared to The Blind Side, because Oher helps Coach Burt Cotton by playing on the team, making the team that much better. It is wrong that “black actors are continually evaluated on the appropriateness of their professional choices” (Colombe, 2002, p. 1). In The Blind Side, before Oher started playing football, he was homeless and living a terrible life. It would be wrong to judge Oher, especially considering he changed his whole life…

As mentioned in the present chapter, symbolic interactionism is an important theory in sociology that examines “how we [as humans] construct meanings, how we use symbols to communicate with one another and how symbols are the foundation of our world” (Henslin, 2012). In the field of sociology this theory consists of three fundamental themes –“humans have a self,” “people construct meanings, and act on the basis of those meanings” and “people take into account the possible reactions of others” (Henslin, 2012). Such themes aid in piecing together how we as a shared society and group of individuals find meaning in our lives as well as in the world around us through the incorporation of symbols. Thus, the overarching aim for the theory of “symbolic…

For this assignment I chose the Blindside. There are a couple reasons I chose this movie, one being it is the only movie I had on DVD, and the other being that it has to do with my future career. I hope to work with adoption and foster care, as well as low income communities. This movie was filmed and publicized in 2009, and was based off of a true story. The story line is about a character named Michael Oher, or in the beginning he is called Big Mike.…

Many films throughout history, have not only illuminated some culture’s shortcomings but the strength and ability to deviance in hopes of attaining meritocracy. It is within the arts, films, music and literature that are produced by a culture that researchers can identify the evolution of change from analyzing the micro symbolic interactionism between individuals to the social consensus in the functionalist theory that produces an organic solidarity. Each of these theoretical paradigms allow one the ability to change perspectives in order to deduce how values and norms are modified. Although each theoretical theory can be applied to the film, “The Blind Side” it is while utilizing the macro conflict theory, that social inequality is seen to…

“The Blind Side” is a film depiction of the life of NFL left tackle, Michael Oher and his miraculous transition from being a homeless teen to becoming an NFL first round draft. The film follows the development of Michael as he is taken off the street by the Tuohy’s and with their support became involved with football. I chose this film because it portrays the social and behavioural development of a teen without a stable upbringing and how it affects his relationship and encounters with others. The movie does not only show the development aspect of one stage of adolescence but follows Michael’s character from childhood to his adult years. As well, the movie forms basis of comparison between Michael and the Tuohy children.…

A popular proverb says, what a man [women]thinks in his heart so is he. This expresses the fact that the way we think impacts the person that we are. I believe this to be true, however our thoughts are a product of our self-concept which can be reinforced or changed by the communication that occurs within our interpersonal relationships. In the 2009 American Biographical sports drama, “The Blind Side,” they present the audience with many examples of the positive effects of good interpersonal communication in creating and maintaining a positive self-concept and self-esteem. The interactions of the main characters, Michael Oher and Leigh Ann Tuohy, played by Quinton Aaron and Sandra Bullock, and the entire Tuohy family demonstrates this.…
