Sociological Perspective Of Conflict Essay

The sociological perspective of conflict theory was first thought of on a macro-level by Karl Marx the German philosopher who also wrote the communist manifesto. Marx saw society as a competition between the various classes of society, mainly between the rich and powerful members of a society called the Bourgeois who owned all the businesses and the Proletariat, which was the class that worked for the Bourgeois. Marx also saw conflict theory as the struggle between social institutions such as schools who were able to offer better learning for the average student or in government where the few, more powerful participants were able to control many of the decisions made for the many. As the idea developed more sociologists developed Marx’s ideas such as Max Weber who also thought social structure can cause conflict along with what Marx suggested. The standard curriculum in school is designed to fit a specific type of person and not to try and assist the masses. This creates an unfair advantage or conflict between people of different races, genders, and socioeconomic standings. All students are required to learn the same material and depending on your background you may be able to hire a tutor to help you understand the material better and if you are not able to hire a tutor you will have to work extremely hard to understand the material yourself. If you are not able to hire a tutor, you will more than likely have to work after school and on weekends taking time away from studying which in turn allows the better off students to do well and the others to fend for themselves. I think we have school because it allows the Bourgeois to maintain their status at the top of the socioeconomic ladder by determining what and how the Proletariat will learn to keep them at their socioeconomic
