Sociological Notion Of Impression Management

Sometimes it feels like, in this crazy world, we find ourselves living two different lives. You go to work and you are one person but when you get home you are someone completely different. Or you go to school and you act one way but as soon as the bell rings you act another way. Well, you are not alone. Everyone lives this way. The reason behind this is a sociological notion that is referred to as “Impression Management”. Impression Management is just how it sounds, when we try to manage the impression that we give others (Henslin, 2014). For us, life is like a movie. With Impression Management they use the terms: “Front Stages”, “Back stages”, and “Role Performance”. In this movie called “Life” when we act a particular way, in front of others, …show more content…
As a teacher I use the setting, appearance, and manner sign vehicles to communicate my role performance. Entering the Education work field at the age of 18 has been very challenging, especially since I work in the 5th grade unit. The way that we display ourselves in front of others effects the way others will behave and interact with us (Wright, 1987). When working with kids, I have to give them the impression that I am much older than them and that I have authority. That way, the kids will behave for me and understand that I mean business. I absolutely love my group of students and I tend to want to be their friend and support system. However; I have realized that I cannot act this way with these kids. Instead, I have to be the adult and put my foot down. When I do this, I use the “behavioral management” approach (Singh, 2013). I remain firm with my students so that they do not walk all over me and disrespect me and my position. This take a lot of practice because my “authentic self” wants to show them compassion and …show more content…
Playing the friendship role can be very difficult. You do not want your friends to feel betrayed, but you want to show your true personality at the same time. I have this one friend that is very near and dear to my heart. He met a girl this past year at college and he has completely changed. Some of our other friends have tried to tell him that she controls his life but, he does not want to admit it. Another one of our friends asked me if I liked our friend’s girlfriend and while I did not like her, I simply replied “If he’s happy that is all that matters”. It is extremely difficult for me to respond when my best friend comes to me about situations concerning his girlfriend. I do not put the girlfriend down, I just result back to saying, “If you’re happy, then I’ll be happy for you.” This is an example of “opinion conformity”. Opinion conformity is when you agree with someone’s opinion to stay on their “good side” (Deepak, 2014). While several of our other friends and I do not like our one friend’s girlfriend, it is my role as his best friend to stand by him through the good times and the bad times, no matter

In a NY Times article, “Is Fat Stigma Making Us Miserable?”, Emilie Lucchesi talks about the causes of psychological health problems arising not necessarily from the physical characteristic but from the overbearing stigmatization of being overweight in our society. Contrary to popular belief, there exists almost no direct relationship between how much a person weighs and their psychological health welfare; the problem lies, instead, within how people are being treated. She explains that it’s rather “the teasing, judgment and unsolicited advice directed at overweight people that can cause the greatest psychological harm.” The article goes on to introduce Courtney Bailey, a media scholar in popular culture, as she explains that the fat stigma…

The Importance of Reality Maintenance in an Online Camming Site INTRODUCTION One of the most basic theories found in symbolic interactionism is the idea of reality maintenance and the thought that society is constantly being created through the interaction of individuals. A shared meaning must be found between the actors in a situation. This can be achieved by negotiation and acceptance of a pattern. Choices are then made within that created reality between the actors and it is then that subjective reality becomes objectively “real.”…

Journal #3 After taking the inventory my Mom received a high context score of 29 and a low context score of 38 with a difference of nine. I received a high context score of 32 and a low context score of 39 with a difference of seven. We are very similar in our low context scores and pretty similar in our high context scores. After discussing our results and what they mean, we decided that we definitely are more direct when talking and we aren't as likely to pick up on things like emotional tone or verbal cues. While we were discussing high context versus low context, we both connected on having a hard time thinking of nonverbal cues and how they come into conversations.…

As an active participant in society, one may seem stuck in a position of damage control where they must manage expectations at work, home, church, school, and with friends. This doesn’t mean they are lying, but instead often putting forward multiple versions of one’s self to control social situations. Goffman describes this as the dramaturgical approach, comparing these multiple versions of self to how an actor would portray their role in a performance (Chambliss & Eglitis, 2016, p. 96). There are many people in the world who may act a certain way while at home alone or with their family and very different when another person is introduced into the equation. In the same sense, many people must be very professional and dependable at work to stay employed or excel in their field, but may be very different around their close friends.…

My Gender and Religious Identity It is the God in Me Letoya Garland Lindenwood University While enrolled in the Social and Cultural Foundations course, I was required to look within myself and who I am regarding my race, gender, class, religion, and age. I have grasped that society places us in the category of what they perceive to be true. Although I should not care what others think and believe about who I am, I work hard to fit in the acceptable social groups. Prior to my enrollment, I believed that my gender, age, and religion are possibly the simplest part of me compared to my race that is more complex.…

Erving Goffman is a contemporary theorist whose work on understanding society through ‘Stage’, explains human behavior within different societal settings. Stage is a metaphor used to describe the self, which is defined as an individual’s performance that is created according to a specific impression or situation that is occuring. Presenting an image of oneself is necessary to establish social order, by manipulating the perceptions of other people on how we want them to see us and can become very conflicting. According to Goffman, we conflict ourselves when we constantly want to play a role to appear ‘normal’—he calls this passing. Passing disguises the stigmas that a person has, as a way to avoid the shame we feel about our imperfections.…

Introduction Six years ago I probably would have said that an ideal productive classroom was one where all the students sat quietly in their chairs, whilst the teacher either walked around the room or sat at her own desk working. Specifically, during my graduate semesters I have really adapted and altered my ideal curricular design based on the research and experiences that have had a part exploring. There is so much more to a classroom of students beyond the surface. With every aspect from the placement of the desks, colors or designs used, and the interactions between teacher and student, there is an explanation of why it can be done a certain way.…

After reading the first few chapters of The Multiplier Effect (Wiseman, 2013), and reflecting on the focus of being a liberator in my school, I have realized that making mistakes is acceptable if you can learn from them. No one is without mistakes or accidents, but if you can become aware of a potential personal weakness in a certain area or a character trait that can be focused upon, the mistake becomes an experience to understand yourself in the future. When I reflect on mistakes I have made throughout my teaching career, there are several that come to mind in which I have learned from, and have made me a better teacher. First, I remember a time, and there still are times occasionally, when I find myself acting somewhat like a “tyrant.”…

In education, many teachers face behavioral issues with students in the classroom. One of the main issues that educators face in the classroom is students not making an effort to learn. Many of these issues can be demolished if the teacher starts recognizing the different learning style that each student possesses. For example, if the need of students is not met in the classroom, they tend to get bored, act inappropriately, and start giving behavior problems to the teacher. Similar scenarios happen with teachers when their needs are not being met, they get frustrated and do not perform at their be best in the classroom; therefore, as educators, we must acknowledge that not just students have issues, but novice and veteran teachers also face…

For example, after an evaluation, when someone asks me how it was, I would always say “I’m not sure” or “It was okay I guess”. By replying in such ways, regardless of whether I did good or bad, others wouldn’t think that I’m trying to come off as better than how I thought I was, or how I actually am. Although this was a negative representation of me in front of my peers, I would portray myself differently when I was in public with others. It was said that one’s actions in public are different than those in private (page 5).…
