Remember the Titans (September 2000) is a movie that will forever be known as a great. It’s not just a basic movie about football, it’s much more than that. It’s a movie that proves that even though times get rough, it’s possible to overcome it. This movie shows various forms of sociological issues in Alexandria. Discrimination is very evident throughout the entire movie. The white community does not want anything to do with the black community nor do they want to be around them. They do everything in their power to show they don’t want blacks in their town. Many of the football players try to show their town that they’re regular human beings just like them. Taking place in Virginia in 1971, the film shows the racial tension of the community using techniques to make it cinematic. When the two teams first merged, the players feared for their starting positions now that there was more competition. Coach Boone made it known that he was not going to pick favorites based on the color of the players’ skin. He stated that “The best player will play, color won’t matter.” Boone forced the players to get to know one another and to treat each other as teammates and equals.…

In Remember the Titans, the community of Alexandria battles with overcoming racism through the radical and aggressive decisions made by Coach Boone. An example of this is the scene when all the boys are getting on the bus to go to the training camp. The boys segregated themselves out of habit and nature but Coach Boone forces the boys to get off the bus and pairs them together to break what society has taught them. Inside the gym during the roll call, them boys again separated themselves because the thought of coming together was looked at as wicked and appalling. Racism was a natural emotion during this time period.…

The social and political system in the United States of America unquestionably revolves around white supremacy and misogyny. Many pop culture icons have attempted to make a change, but none have seemed to have done it quite like Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. The pop icon released her album, Lemonade, in April of 2016, which lyrically and visually shows themes of different social issues such as racism and the treatment of women. Beyoncé combines the two together and explicitly discusses the injustices faced among African-American women, which can be heard and seen in the visuals during songs like “Don’t Hurt Yourself” and “Freedom”. Beyoncé takes her personal life, expands it, and leads it into the illustration of the struggle black women face across the United States.…

Plot Clashes in Clash of the Titans Between Clash of the Titans, the original Greek story, and the 2010 movie, there are a variety of similarities and differences. Although both plot lines follow a similar pattern, the details in the Greek story are much different than the movie. Simply stated, in the movie version it is more about Perseus saving Princess Andromeda and reuniting with Io, while in the Greek mythology plot, Perseus is attempting to save his mother, Danae, from marrying the awful Polydectes by being challenged to chop off the head of Medusa. Similarities of this story and movie are that King Acrisius ordered the execution of his daughter, Danae, and her son, Perseus.…

all the questions of race relations, and of stereotyping. That was the farthest from minds. Again, what we were trying to do was to present an amusing set of characters in as amusing a background as we possibly could, doing amusing things, to entice that audience to come back next week. (Turner, 1994) Henry Gates expressed in documentary, Color Adjustment,” When we think of this group of people whose historical experience had been transformed by the war (World War II), poised for full integration into the American society, and then we think about, what they were greeted with, as television made its debut. They were greeted with images of fully autonomous, segregated, separate black communities, which was the community in which Amos ‘n’ Andy…

Friday Films have had a major impact on our judgement of other cultures. The movie, “Friday”, is no exception. This movie takes place in the 90’s and revolves around Ice Cube’s character, Craig and his misadventures in a poor suburban neighborhood in South Central Los Angeles on a Friday. Although it’s a very comical movie, the depiction of African Americans is very degrading and inaccurate for both the men and women of the culture. The men in the movie are made out to be violent scoundrels, excessive drug users, and conniving thieves.…

The 2014 film Selma follows recent Nobel Prize recipient Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the months following the initial strides toward desegregation. In the opening scenes, two separate scenarios of racially motivated crimes and inequality are portrayed ‒ four African American girls talking about how to do their hair are killed by an explosion while walking down the stairs to a church service and a woman named Annie is denied the right to vote because she cannot name every county judge in her state. Dr. King meets with the president to discuss these incidents, only to be told that they are less important than the more pressing matter of basic desegregation. Throughout the film, we are giving glimpses of various landmark events and activists,…

The sports teams also merged and seeing this integration was horrific initially. Players did not respect each other and White players even refused to play with the Black kids. Even the differences in culture were apparent, for example, the taste in music was different, the way Backs and Whites joked was different, and the tension was always high. Although the negatives were clear, I also saw the positives where White characters began to see their Black team mates as brothers and not a different color. Still movies like this painted the picture very clear.…
