Sociological Imagination

One might wonder why they behave towards certain people the way they do, why they desire certain items over others. Majority of society aren’t aware how much the media plays a factor in these decision. Societies us the sociological imaginations to explain some of these answers. The sociological imagination is defined as the awareness of the relationships between an individual and the wider society. Meaning how our person situation is connected to history and the society where we live. That’s where media comes and plays a big part. There’re some theories to explain the role that the media plays in society. Functionalist, conflict, symbolic and feminist theory interpret what they believe the media does to our society.

While functionalist believes that the media is necessary and beneficial to society, conflict theory views the media as way to surprises minorities by limiting them out of the media and feeding of that negative stereotypes that has been placed in society. Conflict theory believes that the media control how we view certain group of people and situation. They believe that those in power or have the funds and resources control and manipulate the media. This makes it an unreliable and discrimination plate from. The rich and power are gatekeeper for the media which limits the truth. The powerful get to define what should be viewed in society as beautiful, lazy, and smart and so on. This gives a misrepresentation of what society truly consist of. A Conflict theory believes by doing this it keeps those in power in control and suppress minorities. Which makes the media a misguiding resource that society should stay away from or be
