Sociological imagination allows someone to understand their past experiences within the context of history and larger social structures (Mills 1959; 5). It’s a way to think about the relationship between the individual and society. Sociological imagination allows us to see the relationship between personal troubles and public issues. Sociological imagination helps us to understand things that happen to us due to class inequality. Growing up in a lower middle class home been a big part of making me the person I am today. Neither of my parents went to college so my mom bounced around from minimum wage job to minimum wage job while my dad worked a government job that paid a decent amount. My parents were lower middle class so they weren’t friends with people who owned businesses that could offer me a job as soon as I turned 16. When my friends got their license they also got a shiny new car, I never even got my license because my parents couldn’t afford driving school and I had no job to pay for it. Before school started my friends would get a whole new wardrobe of school clothes, but I just wore my clothes from the years before. If the clothes still fit and weren’t torn up then what was the point in wasting money on new things? When my clothes did eventually get torn up or no longer fit then thrift stores are where we went to get new clothes. I always saw how my family’s social class effected our life and how different we were from my friends’ lives. I was aware of the effect our social class played in our life. My friends were never really aware of their class standing or how social class effected their life because it didn’t have much of an effect on their life. They didn’t have to budget. They didn’t have to hear their parents argue about how they were going to pay their bills every month. Their social class didn’t matter to
