Sociological Factors In Education

When we think of the word education, we often associate some type of school with receiving an education. Education is the process of receiving and gaining knowledge in any area of study whether it is English, mathematics, chemistry, or even a trade such as welding. However, there are other factors in our education that allow us to gain knowledge in other areas that are not so obvious. These factors are termed as “sociological factors” in that they allow us to gain an understanding and appreciation for people who belong to cultures that are not our own. These factors are embedded into the education of all people and need to be considered if we wish to improve our educational experiences. Sociological factors such as diversity, culture, microcultural groups, and multicultural processes will allow each and every one of us to better respect the beliefs of other cultures and thus promote social justice throughout the entire world. When many of us have been around similar people for a significant portion of our lives, we tend to get into a mindset that everyone else is just like ourselves and that we have similar thoughts and actions. The psychological theory that describes this phenomenon is the “false consensus effect”.
