Sociological Experiment: Breaking Social Norm

Improved Essays
For this sociological experiment I broke the norm that led to the ¨personal bubble¨ rule, by getting, “too close¨ to strangers when I talk to them by society's standards. This social norm shows that people are used to having their own space and not having others be within a certain distance. When you talk or interact with another person you both are in control of the personal space given. This leads to me testing others by stepping over boundaries to make them feel uncomfortable, nervous, or embarrassed.
My first location was the Eastland Mall in Bloomington IL, many people seemed to ignore me when I was just simply asking for directions, but when I did get a response I had to be ready to spring into action and willing to get close to a complete

I noticed that as people walked passed me and the person I was talking to they stared and I felt the judgment from just the looks on their faces. I felt as if the mall made me feel more judged because of the difference of environments. The people at Target seemed more willing to take time to talk to you than the people at the mall. Majority of the people either ignored me altogether or seemed really confused when I broke personal space. Picking the people I wanted to experiment on was difficult because you never knew if they were going to accept the situation. The norms exercise social control proves that society is a nonstop judgemental …show more content…
People often feel as if they don’t fit in. They often fake their feelings or emotions towards acting out. By breaking social norms it can make one feel as if they are “acting out.” They have this feeling of embarrassment and become anxious. This later leaves them to fade into the way that everyone else acts and never expresses their true thoughts. They are considered followers due to the fact that they do not speak up and share their opinions. Society is something everyone is trying to escape, but at the same time they are the reasoning for this social

As a person who is not from the United States, I found the norm that is taken for granted in the United States but that is not normal for some countries. The norm is that people keep right while walking. I guess this is because driving on the right side is provided by a low in the United States. Thus, the deviant behavior that I did is to break the norm of walking the right side. In order to break this norm, I observed my feelings and others’ reactions in two situations of when I and someone pass each other on the stairs ; I walk on the right side, which is normal for people in the United States, and I walk on the left side, which is the behavior that may be able to violate their norm.…

I broke the social norm Thursday evening around seven-thirty at the Olive Garden in Hialeah, Fl. The restaurant was busy at the time of arrival. The majority of the customers looked to have a Latin background, while the rest were black or white. Everyone seems to be middles class civilians. The atmosphere of the restaurant was welcoming, loud, energetic, and friendly.…

The Garfinkel experiment As we go about our daily lives, we engage in social norms although we might not stop to think about what they are, the role they play and how it may affect us if it’s broken. Because of this I was given the task to break a social norm and analyze how society responds. This experiment is referred to as the Garfinkel experiment (taking the name of the sociologist who developed it,) whereby social norms (being unwritten rules that are accepted by society and govern the way individuals i.e. society behave,) are broken and the responses analyzed. These rules are expected to be followed, as such when broken you will receive a response of which generally falls into two categories according to Garfinkel: fear and amusement.…

I have always had a bad habit of violating social norms whether it be raising my hand to use the bathroom, making loud noises in public, being completely silent when near close friends, or holding the door open at in awkward distance, or in awkward positions. One of my favorite social norms to break has always been awkward eye contact, or when someone else is staring at me, male or female I wink. I enjoy making people feel uncomfortable and violating social norms is the easiest way to do this, it is also the only way to do this. I had to do some thinking of a social norm that I could go against that I already do not break that often, and when I think I tend to fidget with whatever is in my hand. When I started my “Act of Deviance” I was originally just fidgeting with a pen in sociology, and then Lydia Cook started and…

Norms are important rules and expectations set by society. These rules and expectations are expected from society and are a valued standard on how someone should act. Breaking or deviating from social standards are often looked down upon by society (Bobel, et al. 5). The norm I am breaking is treating a baby doll (Alegra) like she is real. My baby’s daddy (my brother) and I are taking Alegra out to eat..…

As I was violating this social norm, I felt strange and out of place. I had a lot of awkward encounters that day and i think it was because i normally don't stop and start talking to strangers or greet them by using hand gestures. Normally if someone smiles or says hi, i smile back or say or hi and then we both go our separate ways. With this experiment, I would have to stop and greet them in an unusual and personal way.…

We live in a society where it is difficult to go against the norm. Each of us are pressured to act a certain way, or look a certain way in order to be accepted. Such as teenagers may face peer pressure to do certain activities that may not be right to them, but do it anyways, because they want to fit in. But this burden of conformity is not only present in the real world, it can be found in literature as well. The story "St. Lucy’s Home For Girls Raised by Wolves" by Karen Russell depicts that in order to conform to society, individuals abandon their selflessness and compassion and become selfish and apathetic.…

Social Experiment: Defying a Norm For my social experiment I received consent from not only the Walgreens pharmaceutical manager but also the store manager to stand outside and ask a handful of customers walking in to purchase me an over-the-counter drug: Plan B One-Step pill. The nonprescription product: Plan B One-Step pill is a 1.5 mg tablet for women to take up to 72 hours after she had unprotected sex. One must be 17 years old to purchase the “morning after pill.” Note: I was not soliciting customers because I was granted permission. Hypothesis I think females will purchase Plan B for me with less hesitations and fewer questions asked than males would because females are more likely to have been in the same situation as what I am portraying.…

When people are stressed, they don't think straight. In a state of confusion or fear, people tend to join forces, causing them to do the wrong things and follow the wrong leaders (Barnhart). They do not know what, when, or why they should do it. If a person is having a difficult time grasping concepts and ideas, they hold onto any example they can. Like those in The Crucible, the girls follow Abigail’s lead because they have absolutely no idea how to cope with the situation they are in, or they'll have to face the consequences.…

We, as individuals, have values associated with everything around us, including other human beings. In a more sociological term, values are how, as a group, we tend to relatively see things as desirable or not (Values.) Since we all individually want to see people act in a certain way around us, in search of the middle ground for everyone, we have established numerous social norms, the standardized rules that a society—big or small—lives by, to regulate how the members of such society behaves. There are two special kinds of norms: folkways and mores. Folkways are casual norms; in other words, they are norms that originate from casual activities and interactions that are routinely repeated in everyday life, and that, in turn, regulate them.…

In my first observation I decided to go to the YMCA and look at different areas in the building. I went during 2-3pm on Saturday and 12-1pm on Sunday. On Saturday I visited the gym where I saw a plethora of kids playing basketball and a few adults playing by themselves with the occasional group of teens loitering by the courts. On Sunday, however, I visited the weightlifting room where I saw, essentially everyone lifting either with a partner or alone. Although, in the weightlifting room People’s age ranged from a teen to senior citizen.…
