Sociological Effects Of Electronics On Children

A common sociological issue occurring all over the globe is the addiction children have with electronics. Throughout history, humankind has imagined a futuristic world of advanced technology. However, now that it is here, we are abusing it to the point where children, as well as adults, have already become obsessed with it. Their obsessions can result in deviant acts, meaning they break social norms. Finding the balance between using electronics as an intriguing learning tool and occasional pastime seems to be difficult for many families, for many use it as a babysitter. The technology we have today is incredible, but we need to learn how to let our children use it safely without becoming glued to the screen. Other than the fact that electronics are addictive to children, some parents also avoid technology because the internet can be dangerous. One group of adults in Dayton, Texas restrained eleven children in a small home. These children were strapped to beds and locked in rooms, all because the adults claimed to, “tie the children up for safety” (Fernandez, 2012). While this may or may not be the real reason they committed this deviant act of restraining kids, it shows an extreme case of what some adults feel protects children. Laura Lewis Brown wrote an article for PBS called “When to Introduce Your Child to a Smartphone or Tablet” that gives some advice on what is appropriate for children. One section entitled “Content Matters” talks about the different educational games for kids. Technology really can be a fun learning tool, it just needs to be monitored. Brown mentions using memory games that require thinking and nurturing games like caring for pets (Brown, 2018). The absence of violent games will more likely result in less deviance and more useful life
