The video starts off with two boys who appear to be of the same age, about eleven years old. Although these boys are similar in age they come from completely different backgrounds. Global inequality, as defined by Croteau and Hoynes (2015), is “the differences in wealth and power among the countries of the world.” (p.245). There are countries all across the world where a majority of the population live their lives like the children in the video working long hours in dark hot buildings to barely even get by living everyday, meanwhile in countries like the United States there are people who make millions and millions of dollars every year and people who don’t even have to work for their money. According to Croteau and Hoynes (2015) the U.S. is considered a high income nation with an average income of $12,616 per person per year (p. 245), only 9% of all americans make less than this amount, therefore 91% of all americans are making more than what is needed to be considered a high income nation. In low income countries the average income per person per year is $1,035 which would be closer to the bottom of the 9% of the poorest americans.
