Sociological Concepts In The Movie Crash

Examining sociological concepts through a film was an interesting task to do. It was a completely different way of watching a movie. Being able to pull out themes and concepts that we have learned in this sociology class was a great way to learn and understand from a different standpoint. Issues of race, gender, and social class were the main concepts of the movie “Crash.” The concept of race is the main focal point that the movie revolves around; both implicit and explicit. Many concepts could be analyzed, but the focus was mainly on the three issues listed above. The main goal of my analysis of this film is to go in depth with each of these three issues by providing examples from the movie and providing more sociological concepts that further …show more content…
It intertwines the lives of several desperate individuals as they each deal with tense race relations that lie within the city in the aftermath of 9/11. Several stories take place within the movie with inter-related characters. It starts off with an African American police detective (Don Cheadle) who deals with a thieving younger brother and a drugged out mother whose younger brother, Peter is a criminal and gang associate (Ludacris) whom carjack two wealthy couples. There is a distracted district attorney (Brendan Fraser) and his pampered and exasperated wife (Sandra Bullock), a veteran cop (Matt Dillon) who is a racist who repulses his more committed rookie partner, a thriving, Hollywood director (Terrence Howard) and his wife (Thandie Newton) who must deal with the racist cop, a Persian immigrant father who buys a handgun to protect his shop, a Hispanic locksmith and his young daughter who is afraid of bullets. “Crash” was written and directed by Paul Haggis in 2004. The film differs from others in the sense of its approach to racism. Instead of separating these characters into offenders and victims in the concept of race, the victims are often revealed to be prejudiced in all the different situations themselves. The racist remarks and actions throughout the film stem from the obliviousness and the misconceptions rather than a malevolent …show more content…
This term is explained as how we judge other cultures by the values and ideals of our own culture. It means that one believes their culture is superior to all other cultures. At the beginning of the movie officer Graham and his Latina girlfriend argue when he makes fun of her culture by calling her Mexican even though she is not. Other example is when officer Ryan makes fun of the name Shaniqua even though it is a common African American name. There was also another instance when Shaniqua was just in a car accident with a Persian immigrant and says “Oh my God! What is wrong with you people? Uh-uh! Do not talk to me unless you speak American!” Her expression reveals how she believes her culture is superior to another. Some of these characters do not even accept the characteristics of other

The film Crash follows eight groups of people and their interactions with each other in the city of Los Angeles. From car crashes to running into people around the city, the characters experience different kinds of crashes over the course of thirty-six hours. When the main characters are first introduced racial stereotypes are thrown every which way; people are afraid to sell a Middle Eastern man a weapon, a woman moves closer to her husband when she sees a pair of African American men, and African American couple apologizes to two white policemen even though they have done nothing wrong. At each instance, almost every person in some form or another committed a pitfall of error in their critical thinking.…

Crash: Character Analyses in Regard to Metacognition The movie Crash is based on the dynamics of racial stereotypical behaviors. There are a slew of characters in the movie; however, six of them stand out as examples of topics related to metacognition. In viewing the movie, the six various characters interact in connecting subplots that portray realistic issues which arise in society every day. Regardless of possible lack of appreciation towards its overall connotation, the movie delves into true-life situations that cannot be ignored.…

During this scene, we see the female passenger is assaulted by the police officer when he searches her. This assault is an example of gender struggle, where the man is shown as so powerful he can just assault the woman under false pretenses during a body search. These two characters are shown later in the movie when the woman is in a fiery car crash. The same officer who had assaulted her is the first responder to the crash and he is now portrayed as the woman’s rescuer. The scene is the classic damsel in distress and this police officer is there to save her.…

The movie Remember the Titans is an excellent example for sociological theories. Many topics can be observed within this movie, but two of the most prominent topics that we covered this semester are social structure, more specifically race and prejudices, and group processes, focusing on status construction. This movie takes place in a small town in North Carolina that has to deal with the shifting racial makeup of their football team, therefore high school, and therefore community. There is a lot of conflict not only between the different racial groups, but also within racial groups when people have different opinions of what is acceptable. The combination of the two racial groups leads to interesting observations of racial opinions and group…

I decided to watch and analyze the movie Sweet Home Alabama. The movie is focused on the life of one particular character, Melanie Carmichael (actually Melanie Smooter). Melanie grew up in a small town in Alabama; her family was like many of the other families there: country and part of the working, middle to lower class. She married a man when she was younger, but after they split, she moved to New York where she made a new life for herself and met her now fiancé, Andrew. The major conflict in the plot is that Jake, Melanie’s ex, never signed their divorce papers, making them still married.…

Some whites don't use their power towards blacks but clearly show that they dislike blacks. The film shows a few scenes that define racism and power. The areas that will be of discussion are race, discrimination, social class, sports being agents of change, violence in sports, and sports and the media. When the lady in the car sees the officer, she does not want his help because he had molested her in a previous run in with the law. He quickly realizes this by her screams and rejection, but he decides to do the right thing and save her against her wishes. His character, originally portrayed as a racist bigot, now is trying to save the life of a person that had a deep hatred towards him. He used calming language, reassured her that he was not going to hurt her and asked politely if he could continue to save her. His facial expressions were certainly authentic and the accident victim finally allowed him to do his job.…

Throughout all of history, discrimination has always existed in society, whether it is the poor against the rich, female against male or white against black. In the texts I have studied in class, the authors/directors have portrayed their views on the topic of discrimination. In my report I will analyse the overarching theme of “Discrimination will always be prevalent in society” present in my four texts and discuss the connections between them. My first two texts I studied were “Brave New World” written by Aldous Huxley, and “Gattaca” directed by Andrew Niccol. Both these texts show that “Discrimination is a part of human nature”…

People learn things from other people, especially if a person starts to learn bad behavior when they were very young. Some people grow up with bad influences or within a bad environment around them, and these could turn the people into criminals or killers if they see that bad behavior is acceptable or has no consequences. This was the case with the main character in the movie Monster and two sociological theories, both have rational choice theory and differential association theory, strengths and weaknesses in how they explain the main character in the movie. The movie Monster (2003) is about a female serial killer named Aileen Wuornos, who is a prostitute, a hitchhiker and has hopes of being famous, a big star, rich and more valuable…

Discrimination is a prevalent issue in society that has decreased over time, but is still occurring. It can be found in more subtle ways than in the past when Whites had their own water fountain to drink out of and Blacks were forced to sit in the back of the bus. The movie, Crash, depicts the prejudice that is present in modern day society. The characters show how people of different races and social classes interact with one another. The stereotypes about the different races are evidently present throughout the film.…
