As I was reading about all the sociological problems older adults endured. It saddened me to know that we just discard them as if they are just useless. We need to change that negative stigma about the elderly population, change our mindsets as a society because at the end, we will all have to go through that stage of life. The present is a sociological assessment for Bessie Delany. “We live in a society that glorifies staying young and deplores growing old. Older people are viewed as out of touch with what’s happening and their knowledge is rarely valued. Older people are subjected to various forms of discrimination for example job discrimination, older adults in their 50’s and 60s have difficulty finding new jobs” (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2013, p. 718).
A sociological issued faced by older adults is malnutrition. Older adults are the most undernourished group in society. Some of the reasons behind their malnutrition includes lack of money, transportation problems to go grocery shopping, little interest to prepare healthy meals specially if they’re living alone, inadequate cooking and storage areas, decreased or altered sense of taste, poor teeth, they can’t afford dentures or regular visits to the dentist and lastly …show more content…
Bessie revealed in the book that she felt terrible when she gave up driving in her late eighties. She also stated that being old is hard because you can’t do many things as before, she struggled to hung onto her freedom, independence. Bessie also mentioned in her interview that her family and friends always kept an eye on them but her sister and she didn’t want to be dependent on any person.
