Currently my socioeconomic status is lower middle class. This is primarily due to my recent move back to the Midwest. It has been a hard adjustment because I have always been very career driven and was in the upper middle class for the majority of my career. Ironically, I moved away from the Midwest 17 years ago to increase my SES after completing my education in Radiation Therapy. The SES of my family growing up in a single parent home was the working class. Times were different back then and money was tight, but we always had what we needed.
I didn’t correlate SES and education growing up. The majority of people I knew, including parents of friends, did not have any formal education beyond high school. Unfortunately, my mother did not either encourage or discourage me from furthering my education past high school so I did not go back to school until I was 25. A friend of mine through middle school and high school would get $10,000 a year from her grandparents. This mainly went toward her education. I was tired of working two jobs. I realized it was time to make that sacrifice, quit my job, and going back to school in order to get an education and increase my income. I complete Radiologic Technology and Radiation Therapy School, but unfortunately neither were tied to a degree. Ironically, I was able to achieve both a successful and financially rewarding career without my degree, primarily due to my experience as a radiation therapist. I have been very fortunate to have opportunities presented to me. I once applied for a staff positon and was offered a Chief Therapist role. This is how my journey began in management, it wasn’t a thought out decision, it just happened. I was later promoted to the Center Manger role over three offices and was involved in startup centers from the ground up. I was also involved in integrations after a multi-center acquisition. A much larger corporation reached out to me about an Administrator position for five centers in Vegas. This opportunity eventually took me back to California and ultimately back to the clinically side which I am currently quite content. All that being said, the education I am currently receiving through Pimi Medical Institute would have been valuable to have before my management roles, rather than the sink or swim method I learned
