Socioeconomic status can affect an individual’s ability to receive mental health care treatment. Lower income individuals have higher rates of mental illness (Hudson, 2015). But when individuals of lower socioeconomic classes seek treatment, they face discrimination (Kugelmass, 2016). Middle class individuals are three times more likely than working-class individuals to get an appointment (Kugelmass, 2016). Callback rates are also different between classes. When a therapist is calling an individual back about their availability, it is referred to as a callback (Kugelmass, 2016).
