The movie that was selected to critically analyze how older adults are portrayed was The Intern. The Media often portrayals older adults a certain way and it impacts society 's perception on older adults. Ben, supports the main character in the movie the intern. Ben is 70 years old, he is a widow and is retired. Ben use to be an executive for a company called DEX one. Ben wanted to come out of retirement, but finding a job was hard due to the fact he is old and he is retired. Ben answers an ad for the opportunity to become a senior intern at an online fashion site called About the Fit. Ben is a fatherly figure for everyone in the office, he gives advice to his younger co-workers and he looks out for Julie the main character. Ben steps in

There are four theories of aging and on how older adults fit into society. The theory that Ben would be an example of would be the Continuity Theory, which “claims that people who grow older are inclined to maintain as much as they can of the same habits, personality, and style of life they developed in earlier years.” (Moody& Sasser, 2015, p. 12). Ben is retired, but he is used to working, instead of being bored at home, he decides to answer an Ad for older adults who want to be volunteers. Also, there is a perception that older adults are just too slow and they can’t keep up actively and mentally. According the video “Living to be 90 and Beyond” Dr. Claudia Kawas said that exercise is also very important it can be as much as 15 minutes of activity can prolong life. According to Moody& Sasser “fluid intelligence declines with age, crystallized intelligence abilities increase.” (Moody& Sasser, 2015, p. 104). The cognitive ability of an older adults can decline, but their experiences and life events can compensate for their lack of cognitive ability. Julie the main character of the movie The Intern, first thinks that she will have to babysit Ben because he is an older adult, but as the movie goes on Ben is shown to be an asset because he is wise and is able to help out and give great advice since he is older. Socioemotional is being able to have successful interactions and relationships with others. It’s very important for older adults to have healthy relationships with family and friends. Ben in the movie is able to forge good working relationships with his coworkers and he makes a bond with Julies and her family. According to Moody& Sasser “People over age 65 continue to engage in the same activities with the same people as they did in middle age.” (Moody& Sasser, 2015, p. 31).
