It is important to realize that, different is not a part of Society’s rules, even though, it should be. There was a girl, and this girl began to believe in society and she tried to see that they accepted and value all who were different. Negative attitudes and stereotypes are a part of society; they become bigger issues when these thoughts and beliefs turn into actions, such as discrimination and aggression. Over the last decade strides have been made to change societal ideals and norms but research shows discrimination among particular groups remains high. The results of a study done by The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force shows that members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community experience high rates of discrimination and violence (Grant et al., 2011). Theories on the formation of attitudes and stereotypes include Social Learning, Social Cognition, Implicit Association. Resent studies have started to examine the effects media can have on attitudes…

Orange is the New Black is an example of cultural hegemony and the social injustices women and minorities face within the judicial system. It also portrays how the different social statuses of inmates dictates the treatment during incarceration. One inmate in particular that we see struggle is Sophia Burset. Unlike the other ladies, Sophia struggles on a level most do not in this particular setting; she is an African American transgender. I feel like Sophia’s character is a breath of fresh air within the entertainment business.…

Society’s non-acceptance will fall and pave a day for a better future. Society expects individuals to conform to the “standard story,” as coined by Judy Aulette and Judith Wittner, where sex is binary (male or female) and sexuality is assumed to be heterosexual, where an individual may wish to identify otherwise (GW pp. 20). This expectation is exhibited in Jacob Anderson-Minshall’s The Enemy Within: On Becoming A Straight White Guy, where because he grew up as a “tomboy” female, he was interrogated by his school because he did not align with the expectation of his biological sex (pp. 28-33). This simply perpetuates the fact that society expects the “standard story.”…

However, recent research claims this is most likely not the case. With evidence for a more fluid model of identity development, several common themes have been identified. One major influence lesbians appear to face are silencing forces, or external factors inhibiting lesbian identity development. One such factor in Hughes life was her family/community environment whilst growing up. Hughes (2004) described her family life as “hideous in a very typically American middle-class white way,” as they were generally unhappy.…

In Allan Johnson’s The Gender Knot, he summarizes everything I was taught about men and women when he states, after giving a brief list of different traits belonging to a male and female that, “As this (referring to the list) shapes how we think about gender, it creates a great divide, with men on one side and women on the other. So long as everyone buys into the split, whether or not it actually describes them, all can have a relatively clear and stable sense of who they are and what’s what(61).” The definition of being a man or a woman in the world has been terribly molded by the social construct of gender. As a child, I was taught to distinguish men and women by certain factors.…

Coming out isn’t ever painless, but in the end it’s worthwhile. On October 10, 2015 I came out to my friends as a lesbian. It took over three years to mustard up the courage to accept myself. The moment I realized I was “different” I immediately block the notion from my head and reframed from it for over two years. I allowed myself to believe the lie I fictitious, until the point I could no longer function.…

Gay love has been an issue for the longest now and it’s beginning to get out of hand. But that’s not the only thing that’s getting out of hand, what also is getting out of hand is societies view on those who are transgender. Which brought to my attention that some people are so reluctant to change that they resort violence and brute force in order to shape things into their image whenever something that they say is wrong starts to occur. They are only interested and care about what they want to see is “right” day to day. The way we approach people who are gay or transgender is outright ridiculous and ignorant which can easily be added to the millions of other situations where ignorance has occurred in history.…

Although much progress has been made in recent years in helping LGBT Americans not be a marginalized group, the way Noah is treated like an alien in I’ll Give You The Sun illustrates how being LGBT still puts you into a marginalized group. Being in a marginalized group means it’s less likely that you were to be accepted, get jobs, find friends and partners, and even makes it more difficult to do the things you love. It’s much more likely that you will be criticized and discriminated against if you are of the LGBT group than if you were straight. This is because it is not universally accepted to be LGBT at this point. Being a member of the LGBT community puts you into a marginalized group which means you would not be accepted as a member of…

Due to the negative connotation concerning these terms, non-heterosexual communities are rejected through preconceived notions of difference. Stereotypical assumptions construct a distinction between heterosexual and non-heterosexual behavior. “Rather than identify as a lesbian, [Djuna Barnes] preferred to say that she ‘just loved Thelma.’ Gertrude Stein reputedly made similar claims” (Nelson, 12). Nelson mentions how Barnes as well as Stein would rather express their love than categorize it.…

No woman should ever feel that their sex defines who they are and that they have to conform to what society’s idea of the role of women must be. When Skeeter’s mother says, “Are you..do you..find men attractive? Are you having unnatural thoughts about..girls or women?” , she fears that Skeeter is a lesbian and wants to “cure” her of any perceived deviant thoughts. Even today, society still struggles with accepting same sex marriage, whether that is because people think it defies the norm or because they just do not believe in it, either way, society needs to learn that every individual is entitled to their own means of happiness and that no one is to judge them for that.…

Not only are other races and women accepted in today’s society, but so are many individuals who declare themselves to be homosexual or otherwise. The American people of the modern age do not (as a whole) discriminate. Each individual is allowed the same rights as the forefathers themselves held; a definite step forward for the government of the United States. It has gone so far as to see the first African American become President of the United States. Women hold office and represent the people, as well as those who declare themselves as homosexual or…

Black (2014) noted that gender fluidity or different sexualities “are not always accepted as equals by different cultures, and in many cases, are discriminated against or punished” (para. 9). Some are lucky to have the support system that they need to come out and express themselves the way that they want. Others, not so much. Some cultures are not as acceptant as others when it comes to gender fluidity or different sexualities. People who are gender fluid in non acceptant communities normally hide behind a kind of shadow because they are scared of how their community will react once they come out.…
