Dee already was not a fan of where she came from, she even set her home on fire “why don’t you dance around the ashes” (471), but after leaving for college (which was paid for by her Mama and the church) she comes back to her roots, but not because she is thankful. Mama is proud of her roots and seems confused by all that Dee is doing that when she says so a gentle accompanying says “well there you are” (474) as if proving that Mama is ignorant and Dee is right to change everything about herself such as her name. She even takes pictures of the house and taking precious family heirlooms that when offered to her in the past she refused them and now she expects them.
