Gloria’s story is based on her life as an adolescent in America who was bilingual and how people around her constantly forced her to stop speaking her native language (Spanish). Gloria goes on to explain the crime that is being committed by doing such an act. Society was racist towards her whenever she spoke her native language. For example, Gloria expresses, “‘If you want to be American, speak “American”. If you don’t like it, go back to Mexico where you belong’” (200). Reading this once is enough to see that this is racist, and it’s not ok no matter who or where you are. As far as proof of society and how they negatively affect a group of people, Gloria reveals, “Attacks on one’s form of expression with the intent to censor are a violation of the First Amendment” (200). In this quote, Gloria explains how one of America’s most important Amendments is being violated in America by an American society. This shows how a society’s opinion can negatively affect its own
