Meanwhile, an average HEV like the Prius can be driven for 500 miles before its batteries and fuel tank are emptied (EPA's MPG Ratings). This, coupled with the lack of public charging station, makes EVs unsuitable for long range transport. However, recent study shows that the average travel distance in the US is just 50 miles per day, as shown in figure 3 (Haaren). This distance can be covered by most EVs, including the lowest priced models such as the Nissan Leaf (EPA's MPG…

While I do not agree with the views of the authors, I do agree that technology will only continue to grow and there will be benefits. Although I see concerns with this article, I can also see the impact this situation will have on our society over time. In just the last decade, we have seen technology grow, and shrink immensely. By shrink, I mean we can fit what used to be a 60 pound computer system into our pockets. With the decrease in size, the increase in popularity seems to only be growing.…

The major problems of today’s electric cars are definitely range and high price, which primarily results from high producing costs of battery pack. As Elon Musk said, it is not a big problem to build a fully electric car with a long range, but it is extremely difficult to mass produce it, so it can be “affordable” in a way. The high costs of batteries and the ineffective battery technology were limiting their driving range, because the car had to be affordable.
